‘Modern Family’ Season 11: Alex’s overachievement is annoying, but only Dunphys’ middle child could put them in their place

Her constant need to always remain on the top can get irritating when she tries to put others down with her criticism, which most of the time isn't understood by her pea-brained family members.

More often than not, we hear a middle child crib about not being able to figure out where they fit in the family. We’ve noticed Alex Dunphy (Ariel Winter) of ‘Modern Family’ struggle for years trying to put up with her highly dysfunctional household. However, growing along with the nerdy child of Claire and Phil’s for over 10 years, we have learned that only she could bring balance to her rather nutty family.

Alex Dunphy is shown to be an overachiever in every sense. Be it as a grumpy 10-year-old or a research fellow stationed in the South Pole, her eccentricity has always intrigued us. Apart from the commendable intellect that makes her stand out, Alex’s snarky remarks have been as important in highlighting her character.

Her constant need to always remain on the top can get irritating when she tries to put others down with her criticism, which most of the time isn't understood by her pea-brained family members. However, Alex doesn’t seem to care much about others' opinions of her, which has been established throughout the show.

Although Alex comes across as one of the most confident characters we have witnessed in the series, her ordeals with her siblings throw light on the other aspects of her personality, which she chooses to address only on camera.

When her elder sister Haley mocks her appearance or lack of experience in dating, Alex shuts her down by simply saying, “You're never alone when you have books”. But we can’t ignore the fact that she chooses to immerse herself deep in the sea of words to make up for the lack of companionship in her life.

But throughout the 10 seasons, Alex has been the only person in the Dunphy household, who has successfully knocked sense into them. We couldn’t agree more with her when she says, “This family needs a dumbass-ectomy.”

Episode 8 of ‘Modern Family’ Season 11 airs on ABC on December 4.
