Cassie Carli: Body of missing Florida mom found in 'shallow grave' after her ex got arrested
NAVARRE BEACH, Florida: The body of a missing Florida mom was found on Saturday, April 2, nearly a week after she disappeared while going to pick up her 4-year-old daughter from a custody exchange with her ex-boyfriend in Navarre Beach in Pensacola. Cassie Carli's remains were found buried inside a shallow grave close to a barn in St Clair County, Alabama, according to the Santa Rosa County Sheriff Bob Johnson.
Sheriff Johnson told a press conference that Carli’s ex-boyfriend Marcus Spanevelo, who is currently in custody, has ties to the property, without elaborating on the connection. Carli's remains were found hours after her ex Spanevelo was arrested in connection with her March 27 disappearance from a restaurant parking lot in Navarre, Florida, close to where Carli lived. Carli had traveled there to pick up the couple's daughter, Saylor. It remains unclear how Carli died as autopsy is scheduled to happen on Monday, April 4, 2022.

Sheriff Johnson told journalists: "Cassie Carli who’s been missing now for about a week, we discovered her body while executing a search warrant out in Alabama." He added, "It was in a barn, in a shallow grave, so its not the ending that we wanted, obviously. But we're hoping to provide a little closure for the family." Spanevelo is facing charges of tampering with evidence and providing false information related to the investigation.
"He [Marcus Spanevelo] was totally uncooperative. He never cooperated with us. And that goes a long way," Johnson said. "Think about it, It’s your baby’s mother and she’s missing — and you’re not going to cooperate with authorities? That’s pretty tell-tale." He continued, "We hated that Cassie has passed away, but it's good to get closure for the family. It's good to keep this dirtbag in jail, where he belongs."
"I think we have a great case and I think he's either going to spend the rest of his life in jail or get the needle. Hopefully the needle." Spanevelo was interviewed by authorities in Birmingham, when authorities confirmed that Saylor was safe. Police placed him [Marcus Spanevelo] under surveillance in Tennessee which culminated in his arrest Friday by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigations and Tennessee Highway Patrol.
Spanevelo was slapped with his current charges for allegedly taking Carli’s cell phone and getting rid of it. The sheriff added Carli's ex-boyfriend also "lied a couple times in different scenarios." The sheriff said, "I think we have a great case. And I think he’s going to either spend the rest of his life in prison or get the needle." The Tennessee Department of Children and Families is taking custody of daughter Saylor, as per a local news outlet.
