Why was Misha Collins at Oscars 2021? 'Supernatural' fans delighted he's 'trending just for sitting at a table'

Fans were surprised Collins attended the Oscars despite not being nominated for any of the awards, here is why he was there

Misha Collins broke the internet after he was spotted at the Oscars on April 25. The 'Supernatural' star was spotted by users sitting at a table next to director, writer and childhood best friend Darius Marder. 

It didn't take long for Collins' fans to hijack the Twitter conversation with the star trending within minutes of being spotted. During the opening monologue, Regina King spent a few minutes spotlighting many of the academy award nominees present at the event. As the camera panned around the room, eagle-eyed viewers noted Collins calmly sitting at a table.

The 93rd Academy Awards have drawn some big names, but almost no one managed to trend on social media for just their presence. That unique power is reserved for Collins. But it raises the question, what was Collins doing at the Oscars? Surely he could've just watched it at home right? Turns out, there's a really heartwarming reason the actor was present at the award ceremony. 

Why was Collins at the Oscars?

The sole reason Collins managed to snag one of the coveted Oscar tickets is down to his friendship with Marder. The duo's bromance is well known, with many photos of them on social media. They've also looked out for each other in the past. In 2019, Collins spoke to The New York Times on some difficult childhood memories. Shortly after the article was published, Marder tweeted, "Even after 33 years of friendship with @mishacollins I read things in this beautiful article that I never knew about him. While some things made me sad for the boy that he was, mostly I feel proud of the man that he is."

That heartwarming gesture came full circle on March 15 this year. Shortly after Marder's 'Sound of Metal' was nominated for six awards, Collins tweeted, "I'm proud of my dear friend from 7th grade, @dariusmarder, this morning. The film that he wrote and directed, Sound of Metal, just got nominated in six categories for the Oscars. Send him a little love."

That public love can go a long way, as fans have learned. It's likely that the tweet is what led Collins to snag a ticket to the awards. We don't know for sure, since neither Collins nor Marder has commented on the matter, but it is almost 100 per cent the case. Collins was spotted at the 'Sound of Metal' table next to Marder, so he was very likely invited as Marder's guest.

As soon as Collins was spotted, fans got busy. His name began trending on Twitter and is still one of the leading trending topics on the platform. "Im so glad that misha collins is trending just for sitting at a table doing nothing. I love the spn fanbase lmao" one user tweeted. Another joked, "imagine being one of the people there actually nominated for an Oscar only to have misha collins trend just for showing up."

One person said, "misha collins is trending just for attending the oscars and that's very misha collins of him." Another joked, "misha collins how dare you tweet while you're at oscars anyways keep doing it that's so sexy of you."

One user commented, "Here I am, enjoying watching the #Oscars all casual like and then -- Misha? Misha Collins? WHAT!" Another joked, "i can't stop laughing. it's the OSCARS and every entertainment mag is writing about why misha collins is there. he's just SITTING AT A TABLE next to his best friend!!!! his power lmao." Another user tweeted, "okay but seeing Darius Marder and Misha Collins at the Oscars together is actually so wholesome and inspiring because they show how amazing a supportive friendship is and how much it means and I love that."

We should've seen this coming. Back in November 2020, Collins tweeted, "Congratulations on the premiere, Dar! I know it’s been a long and arduous journey, and it’s a masterpiece. (I get to be your plus-one at the Oscars, right?)" to which Marder replied, "As long as I can pick out your dress." We can only say, good choice Marder! Not only do we love your best friend being there to celebrate such a big moment, but we also love your choice (if it is your choice) in clothing.
