RIESE PIO X, ITALY: A woman named Miriam Visintin, who had been in a coma since a car crash on Christmas Eve 1991, died on May 10, 2023, at the age of 57. Her husband of 33 years, Angelo Farina, has informed that she died of cardiac arrest at the San Bassiano hospital and said, “She finally had peace for her injustice... Finally she's up there in peace and in paradise.”

The husband expressed, as reported by La Repubblica, "At first it was hope that animated me. I thought that, sooner or later, she would wake up." He said, "I'm fine, now I feel light, because I know that Miriam has stopped suffering. These last 40 days have been terrible: first a pleural effusion, then a series of complications and even two cardiac arrests."

What happened?

Miriam went into a coma after suffering serious head injuries when her Fiat Panda crashed into a pole in Casoni di Mussolente on December 24, 1991. The couple had tied the knot and moved in together just a year before the crash. Talking about it, Angelo said, as per Daily Mail, "We had only been married a year and a half when tragedy struck. We were so young and had so many projects... fate has been cruel to her. She didn't deserve all of this."

'When I married her I swore to stand by her'

Following the crash, Miriam was initially moved to the La Madonnina residential home for life-preserving care. The doctors there told Angelo that his wife, who was 26 at that time, would likely not survive. But he said, "When I married her I swore to stand by her through thick and thin." She was then moved to the Casa Sturm, and later, to San Bassiano following a pleural effusion. Throughout this phase, her husband Angelo remained by her bedside and would visit the hospital at least once every single day. Sometimes, several times a day - only making an exception during the pandemic, states Daily Mail. He said after the funeral on May 13, "I went every day, during the lunch break, at least 15 minutes. Sometimes I managed to go even in the evening. If I went back, I would do it all over again."

He said that he "decided right away to stay there next to her, forever, until the last of her days. It was very difficult. Not an easy situation to accept. I had so much anger inside. Such a beautiful, good and special girl shouldn't have ended that way." Davide Faraone, a member of the Chamber of Deputies of Italy, shared the story of Miriam and Angelo on his Facebook page, while the mayor of Cassola paid tribute and said, "What struck me a lot, in addition to the tragedy of a vegetative life that lasted 31 years, is the closeness of her husband, perpetuated in daily gestures of love for so long. In a very self-centered world, this example gives reason to believe that humanity still exists."
