ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA: A Minnesota man was convicted by a jury for raping his girlfriend's twin four-year-old daughters and giving them a sexually transmitted disease.

Police in St Paul, Minnesota, first began investigating Arturo Macarro Gutierrez, 36, after one of the young girls told her grandmother in October 2018 that her "daddy" hurt her, according to a criminal complaint obtained by the Duluth Tribune News.

The woman took the girl to a hospital, where tests determined she had gonorrhea, an infection caused by a sexually transmitted bacterium that is most commonly spread during vaginal, oral or anal sex.

The suspicion was immediately cast on Gutierrez, who was dating the girl's mother at the time, and he was arrested the same month after a SWAT team executed a search warrant at a residence in west St Paul and found him hiding in the attic.

When questioned, he denied hurting the girl, but then tested positive for gonorrhea and was charged with sexual assault. He was then charged with another count of sexual assault after the victim's twin sister also tested positive for the sexually transmitted disease.

This past week, a jury convicted the 36-year-old of four counts of criminal sexual conduct, including two in the first degree and two in the second degree following a four-day trial at the Ramsey County District Court.

In a statement issued after the verdict, Ramsey County Attorney John Choi said, "Cases involving sexual assault of young children pose significant barriers since they do not possess the language to describe the acts, may not understand that the abuse was wrong, and are susceptible to intimidation and manipulation by the offender."

"This verdict is attributable to the tremendous courage of the young victims and the willingness of caring adults to believe them,” the statement read.

Gutierrez is scheduled to be sentenced on April 1, and Assistant Ramsey County Attorney Dawn R Bakst, who prosecuted the case, is reportedly intending to seek a longer sentence than specified in state sentencing guidelines given the gruesome nature of the crime.
