Mike Huckabee claims Trump is eligible for a third term, says he's been named to head 2024 re-election campaign for POTUS

The Republican, who ran for the presidency in 2016 briefly before endorsing Trump, claimed he has been asked to lead Trump's re-election bid in 2024 and that the Democrats will cease to exist as a party by then.
UPDATED DEC 13, 2019

Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee on Thursday, December 11, took up President Donald Trump’s favorite job of trolling the Democrats by saying that he planned to explain how the incumbent will be eligible for a third term. As per the 22nd Amendment, American presidents are eligible for two maximum terms and the only president to have served more than two terms was FDR whose longevity was facilitated by crises like the Great Depression and the Second World War in the 1930s and 1940s. The 22nd Amendment was passed two years after FDR’s death who was just months into his fourth term in April 1945.

Trump will be completing his maximum tenure of two terms in 2024 if he is elected for the second time next year although the president has said in the past that he plans to hold on the presidency for years.

Huckabee said he is in charge of Trump's 2024 campaign

The 64-year-old Huckabee, who served as the governor of Arkansas between 1996 and 2007, also claimed that he has been asked to head Trump’s re-election campaign in 2024. The businessman-politician will turn 78 that year.

In the run-up to his appearance on the show of Fox News’ Sean Hannity late on Thursday night, Huckabee tweeted: “Due to the illegal attempts by Comey, Dems, and media, et al attempting to oust him as POTUS. So that's why I was named to head up the 2024 re-election.'

“Greatly honored to be asked to chair [President Trump's] re-election campaign for POTUS in 2024. Gives me lots of time to plan! By then the Dems will no longer be a political party in America, replaced by the New Whig Party,” the Republican leader said in another tweet.

Trump has in the past praised other foreign leaders’ power grab. For example, he lauded his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping after he became his country’s lifelong president in 2018. He said the US could also try something on China’s lines. Even after the Mueller report on Russia’s alleged meddling in the 2016 presidential election came out in April, Trump mocked his critics saying he was going to serve for the next 10-14 years. When being awarded a trophy as a token of appreciation while hosting the participants of the Wounded Warrior Project Soldier Ride.

“This will find a permanent place, at least for six years, in the Oval Office. I was going to say for at least 10 to 14 years. But we would cause bedlam, so we’ll say six,” he said.

Huckabee himself had run for the presidency in 2016 but dropped out early after a poor showing in Iowa. He then endorsed Trump and his daughter Sarah Huckabee Sanders was employed in Trump’s campaign. Later, she went on to become the second White House press secretary of the Trump administration. She returned to Arkansas earlier in 2019, indicating that she could run for the state’s governor.

The president said he supported her.
