A man in Michigan accused of raping a 3-month-old infant has now pleaded no contest to two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct.

Thirty two-year-old Matthew Toole entered the pleas at the Calhoun County Court on January 28 in order to avoid the prospect of going to trial after the prosecution filed a motion to add a witness in the case.

Toole is one of four people facing trial for their alleged involvement in a child pornography ring, and who according to authorities sexually assaulted their own children among others.

The Daily Mail reported that Toole will have nine counts dismissed, including ones for child abuse and production and possession of pornography, in exchange for pleading no contest to the first-degree criminal sexual conduct charges. When he is sentenced on March 11, he could face a minimum of 25 years and a maximum of life behind bars for each of the charges.

Toole and his girlfriend, 33-year-old Talia Furman, were arrested in August last year on multiple charges for the rape of a three-month-old girl and a three-year-old boy. The authorities have said that they have since seized videos of the alleged assaults, which reportedly took place between October 2017 and May 2018 in Springfield at a campground in Marcellus. The counts against him involved oral sex and intercourse with the infant girl.

Furman's trial of 11 charges including criminal sexual misconduct and child abuse is scheduled to begin in March. The alleged assaults were revealed to the court in an investigation by the Michigan State Police that launched in May last year after the authorities received a tip that Toole, Furman, and 19-year-old Jayme LaPointe had recorded themselves doing vile things to children.

It was during investigation that the authorities found conversations between the three suspects as well as 37-year-old David Bailey plotting to kidnap a young child from a public place and then torture and sexually assault the child to death before disposing of the body.

The four of them had allegedly spoken about targeting county fairs in Branch, Calhoun, Jackson, a few parades, and parking lots of Walmart and Meijer stores without the security cameras.

The adults were arrested before they were able to carry out the heinous plot. According to the Detroit Free Press, conspiracy charges were filed against each of them in September last year and are still pending in Branch County.

State Police Computer Crimes Unit Detective Sergeant Gerald Yott, the lead investigator of the case, said that each of the people had been abusing their own children aside from others.

He told The Battle Creek Enquirer: "They committed acts on their own children and were making sexually abusive material. They were all sharing and exploiting their own children and other children."

Yott then described the four suspects as "one of the most heinous groups of monsters that we've dealt with". He added: "These are the worst of the worst people. We like to think that this can't happen here, and it does. It happens here all the time."

Two weeks before the group was charged with the kidnapping plot, LaPointe was charged with criminal sexual conduct after she told the police that she and her husband had filmed themselves performing sexual acts on a 1-year-old who she was babysitting.
