Barack Obama, Michelle and Malia held back tears while dropping Sasha off at college because they 'didn't want to embarrass her'

While Malia started attending Harvard in 2017, Sasha will be attending the University of Michigan

Michelle Obama revealed further details about her younger daughter's first day at college and how she and the rest of her family members had to fight back tears during the emotional send-off because Sasha had roommates.

Only days after doing an interview with People magazine, where she revealed the emotional moments that led up to the heartbreaking departure of Sasha as she started a new phase of her life, the former first lady appeared on the 'Today' show on Tuesday, December 10, and recalled how she, along with her husband and their eldest daughter, Malia, were present for the special moment trying their hardest not to embarrass themselves in front of the new college goer's roommates.

When asked by the show's host if there were tears at the drop-off, Michelle said, “There were," adding, “We were really good about it...we didn’t want to embarrass her because, y’know, she had roommates."

The tear works started much later in the day, the mother-of-two revealed. “After lunch, when we said that final goodbye, when we got into a car — me and Barack and Malia, who was there with us — and then Sasha drove off on her own and said that last goodbye, that’s when we were like [crying noises]," Michelle said.

It did not mean that she was not excited to see Sasha grow up to be the individual she always wanted. “I’m excited for my girls to grow up and become independent, but you feel a little melancholy that they will never be the little ones that sit on your lap and listen to your every word and look at you adoringly,” she said. “Those days are over.”

She was seen with Sasha in Vietnam this week to support girls’ education. While Malia began attending Harvard in 2017, Sasha will be attending the University of Michigan.

Michelle previously told People magazine: “Time just goes so fast. But like so many experiences in the last 10 years, we wanted to make it feel as normal as possible, given our family’s circumstances. It was of course a little emotional to drop Sasha off at college. It’s an adjustment to see each other for a weekend here, a holiday break there. but the moments we do spend together feel extra special because of it.”
