A Florida woman is accused of storing her 93-year-old mother's remains in a freezer so she can continue receiving disability payments. On Thursday, July 7, Michele Hoskins, 64, was detained and accused of neglecting to disclose her mother's death and tampering with evidence. This occurred six weeks after police discovered the gruesome discovery at a Sebastian, Florida, home.

Officers were first called to the home of Hoskins and her 93-year-old mother Marie Hoskins back on 28 April when neighbors grew concerned that they hadn’t seen the elderly woman for some time. No one answered the door when authorities sought to do a welfare check, so they briefly left. Police claim that after gaining access to a key with the assistance of another relative, they went back and entered the building to discover Hoskins waiting for them inside.

Police claimed, “As officers checked the rest of the home in an attempt to locate Mrs. Hoskins to check her wellbeing, a deceased body was located inside a large freezer in the garage. The tenant of the residence voluntarily came to the Sebastian Police Department for questioning as Detectives obtained a search warrant for the house on Paddock Street.” She allegedly went on to buy the deep freezer and put her mother's body inside, saying to police she did so because she was worried about losing their welfare payments. During a search of the home, investigators found a heavily soiled mattress hidden in thick brush and cut palm tree branches in the backyard. According to an autopsy, the old woman died naturally and had been dead for almost two weeks before her body was put in the freezer.

According to the police, “During her interview with police detectives, Michele admits to finding her mother deceased in her bedroom. Michele subsequently purchased a deep freezer to conceal her mother’s death for the concern she would not be able to receive her disability benefits. During the execution of a search warrant on the property, a heavily soiled bed mattress was located concealed in thick brush and covered by cut palm tree branches in the backyard. The investigation revealed Marie’s death was from natural causes and that she was deceased for approximately two weeks before being placed inside the chest freezer.” The Indian River County Jail is currently holding her 64-year-old daughter in lieu of a $10,000 bond.
