DENVER, COLORADO: Senator Michael Bennet received reproach on the Internet after claiming that the US has an “obligation” to continue funding Ukraine in its war against Russia.

On Sunday, November 26, the 57-year-old Colorado senator appeared on CBS’ 'Face The Nation', where he told moderator Margaret Brennan that he and his fellow senators realize that the anticipated funds request from the Biden administration needs to include aides for Ukraine.

Last month, the White House brought out an approximately $106 billion national security supplemental funding request that included funding for Israel, Ukraine, and Taiwan as well as humanitarian aid and border security measures, according to the Hill.

“And before that, [we] tried to see if we can get to some sort of solution,” Bennet told Brennan, adding that he recently had "good conversations" with Republicans about the matter.

“I believe, of course, that the Ukrainian people have earned a vote to support them without a negotiation on the US border, but there are others in the Senate who feel differently, and we’re trying to see if we can get to a solution,” he continued.

What did Michael Bennet say about Ukraine funding?

Additionally, Bennet told Brennan that the United States must keep aiding Ukraine in its conflict with Russia, referring to it as a "fight for democracy."

“And I don’t know whether the House will come to the conclusion that that’s enough for them. So, we’re continuing to see if there’s something we can do on the border,” the senator stated.

“My — my view is, there’s always room to make our immigration system better on behalf of the American people. And I hope people of good faith can come together and reach a solution,” he added.

Bennet’s remarks came as Republican and Democratic senators clashed over the planned aid package, with GOP members arguing that border financing ought to be included in the deal along with assistance provided to Ukraine.

Republicans in the House have joined them in opposing further funding for Ukraine, which has been at war with neighboring Russia for nearly two years.

Last month, House Republicans passed a $14.3 billion aid package solely for Israel, which is currently at war with the militant group Hamas. The proposed deal also includes major cuts to the IRS.

Internet reacts to Michael Bennet’s remarks

Bennet’s remarks have garnered immense social media attention, with many users strongly disagreeing with his assertions.

“Stop sending out money to Ukraine, still not our war,” one user said. “Absolutely NOT. What he means to say is that he won’t be getting his kickbacks if funding stops. NO MORE,” another wrote.

“Shows where his loyalty is, he sucks as a senator for Colorado, I guess he never goes to Denver,” a third user slammed while a fourth asked, “Omg do I hate all of these people. How do we allow this to happen? Why do we keep paying taxes? Why do we follow their laws?”

“What “obligation” to Ukraine is Rep Bennett sighting? Our border integrity is of the utmost importance and we are still waiting for the Federal Government to enforce existing laws so we can begin to improve our borders with better security,” another wrote.

“We shouldn’t have to put up with treason. There must be a way to recall politicians who behave this way,” someone else said.
