Six-week-old girl dies of methamphetamine toxicity after being breastfed by drug addict mother
35-year-old Brandi Froeba was arrested for second-degree murder in the 2018 death of her six-week-old daughter Daisy Marie Froeba who tested positive for methamphetamine
A mother in Louisiana has been accused of killing her infant daughter after she breastfed the child while she had drugs in her system.
35-year-old Brandi Froeba was arrested for second-degree murder in the 2018 death of her six-week-old child last summer, the Kenner Police Department announced in a press release on March 9. The authorities began investigating the mother on August 16 last year when she called 911 to report that her infant was unresponsive.
An online obituary in The New Orleans Advocate stated that the child was named Daisy Marie Froeba. PEOPLE reported that the responding officers to the home found the infant had stopped breathing and immediately rushed her to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Even though the officers did not observe anything unusual with the baby, they did notice that her mother was allegedly lethargic and slurring her words.
Froeba allegedly told the officers that she had been breastfeeding her baby earlier that day before the two of them fell asleep. When she woke up a few hours later, she realized that Daisy wasn't breathing and called the emergency services.
The mother consented to a blood sample as part of the investigation and allegedly confessed to using marijuana the previous day.
The Kenner PD press release stated that a post-mortem examination of the infant's body found she had methamphetamine in her system. Additional blood samples of the mother were sent for testing and she allegedly tested positive for meth.
Daisy's post-mortem exam was completed in November last year and her cause of death was determined to be methamphetamine toxicity. Her death was ruled as a homicide.
The authorities carried out the investigation for months, spoke to multiple witnesses and even executed several search warrants on health records, which allegedly revealed that Froeba's third child tested positive for opiates and marijuana in 2016.
At that time, the mother was given informational pamphlets and counseling that detailed the horrors of using drugs while pregnant and breastfeeding. The investigators also found text messages that the mother sent which allegedly discussed her use of crystal meth.
A spokesperson for the Parrish County District Attorney told the publication that Froeba has still not been charged. KADN reported that the mother appeared in court on March 13 where she broke down in tears and was given a $250,000 bond.
