Met Gala 2019: Here are the iconic outfits that turned heads from yesteryear
Fashion's biggest night is set to go down on Monday at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. The theme, "Camp: Notes on Fashion" comes from a Susan Sontag essay published in 1964 and had much of the glitterati trying to make sense and wrap their heads around the theme.
While we wait for the celebs to pop in with their campy looks, here's a list of the fashionistas to look out for after their wild ensembles created quite the buzz from yester-years.
Rihanna: Make way for the Pope
Rihanna dressed up as the pope last year. The singer showed up at the Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination-themed event dressed as an actual high fashion pope. She wore a pearl and jewel-encrusted robe. a matching necklace, Louboutin heels, and hoop earrings to complete her Catholicism-inspired look.
Lady Gaga: The head-turner
Lady Gaga set the stage alight in 2016, her last Met Gala appearance. The theme of the year was "Manus x Machina: Fashion In An Age Of Technology," and the 'Bad Romance' star dressed quite appropriately in a body suit that comprised of silver sequins. A jacket and fishnet tights to go with, she completed her look with a bright shade of lipstick and a rocker-chic hair.
Kim Kardashian West: All Sass and oomph
Cardi B: The Jaw Dropper
Harpers Bazaar titled Kardashian West's look "'Heavenly Bodies' = KKW Body" and rightly so. She donned a Versace corseted gown and kept her jewelry minimal. Kim, a Met Gala veteran thew in a few diamond crosses around her neck and topped it up with a high-half ponytail to add some sass and complete her look.
Talk about debuting in style. One couldn't help but question whether 2018 was her first Met Gala ever as she showed up with designer Jeremy Scott. Ornate jewels and beads covered the gloves, the crown and Cardi's entire dress.
The jaw-dropping moment came in when she walked hand-in-hand with Scott with the billowing satin skirt that had a thigh-slit to add to the drama. It may have been her first appearance, but it most definitely is not going to be her last.
Blake Lively: The Red Ruby fairy
Lively's 2018 Met Gala gown took 600 hours to be made and boy was it worth it. The dress featured a jewel-encrusted corset and the gown was deep ruby red with gold embroidering consisting of some pretty intricate and extensive beading. Add to this the headpiece that made her look like an actual fairy and Lively sure made heads turn with that ensemble.
Beyoncé: The Met Gala Stalwart
She may not have been a part of last year's event after Jay-Z reportedly booked her a holiday, but prior to that, the Met Gala stalwart displayed some stunning looks over the years. Her most daring look comes from her 2016 appearance. The body-con, Latex-like gown that appears to be Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci featured bubble-style Victorian sleeves and what appears to be pearl embellishments.
Chadwick Boseman: An outfit worthy of a king
It may have been an all black and purple affair for Boseman in 'Black Panther,' but he looked immaculate in his all-white Versace outfit that included religiously inspired embellishments, gold shoes, and a cape. The King of Wakanda also sported ivory pants and a cape embroidered with gold crosses and other adornments. Talk about royalty.
Cara Delavigne: Ever the beauty chameleon
So there was a pope, a fairy and Cara Delavigne thought, let's have a confession box in the middle as well. And that's exactly how she made an appearance - looking confession box-esque (Thank you vogue, for that word)! The 'Suicide Squad' star arrived in a fishnet dress that featured a bit of paneling in a cross-stitch pattern and featured a full skirt to go with it.
Priyanka Chopra: Ms. Stunning
If 2017 saw here wear the most outrageous looking trench coat, she turned heads last year wearing a burgundy velvet gown and topping it off with a gold-beaded hood and some subtle jewelry. As Priyanka shared photos from the past year, Paris Hilton was among the many who found the look “stunning”.
Katy Perry: Angelic. Celestial. Ethereal
She may not have co-hosted the event but that didn't stop Perry from getting decked up like an angel. Detailing was the highlight as she showcased two huge white wings with a Versace golden dress and high boots. Oh and do not miss the golden hair.
With the 2019 Met Gala set to begin in a few hours from now, it is only a matter of time before their ensemble outfits flood social media.
