Meghan Markle wears headscarf for first time in public during visit to mosque in Cape Town with Prince Harry
Meghan Markle was seen sporting a headscarf for the first time in public as she joined Prince Harry for a visit to South Africa's oldest mosque.
The Duchess of Sussex visited the Auwal Mosque with Prince Harry in order to mark Heritage Day—a public holiday in South Africa to recognize and acknowledge culture, diversity, and traditions. The mosque is located at Bo-Kaap, Cape Town where the Sussex royals met with religious leaders before walking around the district.
The mother-of-one seemed to have ditched her usual style and opted for a floor-length gown. The 38-year-old also sported a headscarf and was even seen helping out a lady with her's while inside the mosque. Harry and Meghan were seen removing their shoes before he made his way inside the mosque.
The couple met with locals in order to discuss their work with the community. The pair met Father Lapsley, an Anglican and equal rights campaigner who had lost both his hands and eyesight in one eye due to a letter bomb sent by the Civil Cooperation Bureau.
Libo Metel, a child who hugged both Meghan and Harry, later shared, "I gave her a flower, a yellow rose, and she said 'Can I get a hug? You're the sweetest person in the world', and I'm like, 'What the heck?' and then I gave her a hug. And then the prince asked me 'Did you give her a hug?' and he gave me a hug too.'"
Earlier in the day, Meghan was seen wearing a simple white shirt, a pair of black jeans, and a casual denim jacket as she joined her husband. The pair were seen at a surf camp on the Monwabisi Beach which is on the outskirts of Cape Town. The 35-year-old Prince Harry and Meghan will be learning about the work of Waves For Change (W4C), an organization that helps young and vulnerable children from challenging communities through surfing.
