How Megan Thee Stallion coined the term ‘Hot Girl Summer?’

The origin of the term ‘hot girl summer’ can be traced back to Megan’s 2019 mixtape ‘Fever’ wherein the covert of the album included the line, “She’s thee hot girl and she’s bringing thee heat,” and interestingly, the female emcee’s Twitter name is called “Hot Girl Meg,” as reported by LA Times. The line also features on the song “Cash S**t” where the rapper calls herself “thee hot girl.” She had first teased the song in a tweet on July 18, 2019, stating “I feel like it’s only right I drop a hot girl summer song before the summer is over.”

However, the 25-year-old rapper had also explained the meaning of ‘hot girl summer’ in a tweet which she posted a day before as the term was gradually getting a lot of attention on the Internet. “Being a Hot Girl is about being unapologetically YOU, having fun, being confident, living YOUR truth, being the life of the party etc.”

How did the term ‘Hot Girl Summer’ go viral?

The term was soon picked by celebrities. From Tom Hanks to Miley Cyrus and Jada Pinkett Smith, all gave a shout out to the term by incorporating the words ‘hot girl summer’ in their respective social media posts. From clothing brands to make-up brands, from apps to food outlets and from dance cover videos to memes, ‘hot girl summer’ was everywhere. According to Vox, Megan Thee Stallion in an interview with the Root had explained the viral term as well, saying, “It’s just basically about women and men just being unapologetically them, just having a good-a** time, hyping up your friends, doing you, not giving a damn about what nobody got to say about it.
