'Mayans MC' season 2: A quick recap of season 1 before new season of hit FX show airs
Season 2 of FX's very popular series 'Mayans MC' is set to return to television on September 3, 2019. The crime drama series is a spin-off of Kurt Sutter's highly-acclaimed 'Sons of Anarchy' series and it takes place four years after the events of 'Sons of Anarchy'.
But before the show comes back for season 2, here is a little recap for season 1.
Spoilers ahead for season 1 of 'Mayans MC'
Created by Sutter and Elgin James (of 'Lowriders' fame), 'Mayans MC' is a crime drama set hundreds of miles away in the fictional town of Santo Padre and focuses on J. D. Pardo's Ezekiel 'EZ' Reyes, who finds himself in prison after a bad choice - which also ruins his dreams of graduating from Stanford University. He follows his brother Angel's (Clayton Cardenas) footsteps into the motorcycle club world.
EZ, upon agreeing to be an informant for the FBI, is out of jail early. He is now tasked to gather information of the Galindo Cartel to help the FBI take it down. And as it turns out the only person who knows about EZ’s task is his father Felipe (Edward James Olmos).
Outside the prison, life doesn't remain stagnant and there are many new things happening or have already happened, that EZ is unaware.
The biggest of them being his former high school sweetheart Emily's (Sarah Bolger) life updates. EZ discovers that Emily is now married to Miguel (Danny Pino), who is the son of Galindo Cartel founder Jose Galindo. Together, they have an infant child. It doesn't take long for EZ to realize that Emily is not the same as she once.
But the Reyes family has its own troubles. It was eight years ago (back then in season 1) that their mother was killed in the family's butcher shop. Unfortunately for EZ, who is gifted with a photographic memory, he only saw the car leaving the scene. Upon discovering the dead body of his mother, he is filled with grief, anger, and vengeance as he sets on a quest to find the killer of his mother, and this lands him in prison. He chased and shot at someone, and unbeknownst to him, he unintentionally shoots a police officer.
Elsewhere, there is rebellion brewing.
His brother Angel might be a member of the Mayans MC and EZ's sponsor, but this is not just the story. Some of the other members of the club actually working against the Mayans MC on the inside to take the cartel down. If found out, Angel could be killed.
EZ's handler is also family. Kevin (Maurice Compte) is a now lost family connection - EZ's second cousin, his job gets him killed at the hands of Angel.
The secrets of the Reyes family are far from over. Their father Felipe was once a mercenary for the cartel but under another name. And this is bound to get out sooner or later for information like this doesn't remain hidden for long.
At the same time, the whole club is struggling - and quite a lot has to do with Angel.
The members already think there is a rat within the club and the president of the club Obispo 'Bishop' Losa (Michael Irby) is answerable about missing drug shipments and finding the rebels.
'Mayans MC' is more than a drama about warring motorcycle clubs - throughout the first ten episodes, the series takes us through the trials and tribulations of each character, featuring bloodshed and gore.
Dysfunctional family takes a whole different meaning on 'Mayans MC' as another member of the club Richard Cabral's Johnny 'El Coco' Cruz struggles with fatherhood. After his mother, Celia (Ada Luz Pla) tells Leticia (Emily Tosta) that Coco is her father. This comes as a big shock to her since she has always thought that he is her brother. Coco goes to confront his mother, but ends up killing her!
But there is a rebellion brewing in the 'Mayans MC' universe.
Led by Adelita (Carla Baratta), the rebels are manipulating things for their own cause. They want to take down the Galindo Cartel, who are notorious for bringing violence and drugs to the community. While she got her revenge at the end fo the season, she is now working with Miguel and the cartel to help the people. But something tells us there is more to Adelita than just this much.
Towards the end of the season, Alvarez (Emilio Rivera) decides to work for Miguel Galindo and the cartel. He had tried taking down the Sons of Anarchy MC and is not doing the same for Mayans MC. Will they survive?
Season 1 of 'Mayans MC' was very well-received by critics and audience alike. In fact, it was barely after a few episodes of season 1 that FX announced the show was renewed for a second season, which was to be released sometime in 2019. Season 2 is likely to see a lot of crossover scenes with 'Sons of Anarchy' characters.
It remains to be seen how season 2 will take forward this story of vengeance forward. Season 2 of 'Mayans MC' will be premiering on FX on September 3, 2019.
