Maurene Comey: James Comey's daughter is lead prosecutor in Ghislaine Maxwell trial
MANHATTAN, NEW YORK: One of the three lead prosecutors in the much-awaited Ghislaine Maxwell trial happens to be the daughter of former FBI director James Comey, who was infamously fired by former President Donald Trump in 2017. Maurene Comey, an assistant US attorney for the Southern District of New York (SDNY), was previously appointed as a prosecutor for Jeffrey Epstein, before he died by suicide in August 2019. In the past, Comey had been associated with the infamous case of Robert Hadden, the gynecologist who sexually assaulted over 70 women.
Maxwell, the former girlfriend and alleged accomplice of convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, is facing as many as six charges of sex trafficking. She is accused of aiding in Epstein's sexual abuse of young girls, including minors. She allegedly trafficked minor girls for sex and also colluded with Epstein in sexually abusing them. Though she has pleaded not guilty to all the charges, she faces a prison sentence of up to 50 years if convicted.

Who is Maurene Comey?
In 2017, then President Donald Trump notoriously fired the director of the FBI, James B Comey, due to the latter's involvement in a criminal investigation into the 2016 presidential elections. More specifically, Comey was probing whether Trump's advisers sought help from the Russian government in secret to rig the elections in their favor. The dismissal of James Comey set a shocking example of a top government official being fired abruptly at the POTUS' discretion.
Maurene Comey happens to be one of the six children of James Comey and his wife Patrice Failor. She is a 2013 graduate of Harvard Law School with a doctorate, who also holds a Bachelor's degree in History and Music from the College of William and Mary, in Williamsburg, Virginia. Maurene Comey, 32, married to fellow Harvard Law graduate Lucas Issacharoff. Her husband serves as the US Assistant Attorney for the SDNY's Civil Division since September 2019.
Following her graduation from Harvard, Comey worked as a legal clerk for Loretta Preska for around a year. Preska was the chief judge at SDNY District Court at the time. Later, Comey herself joined the SDNY office and was part of several important prosecutions. She presently heads the Violent and Organized Crime Unit of the office and has ample experience in cases around embezzlement, obstruction of justice, and drugs and weapons.
It remains to be seen how exactly the Maurene Comey-led prosecution team, which also includes Alex Rossmiller and Alison Gainfort Moe, frames the case against Ghislaine Maxwell in the ongoing trial.
