Matty was born on April 8, 1989, in Manchester, England, to television actor Tim Healy and soap opera actress Denise Welch. When Matty was a child, his parents led a fast-paced lifestyle and constantly socialized with singers and actresses. When he was four years old, Healy began playing drums with his father, which sparked his interest in music.

In 2012, his parents divorced and his mother began a relationship with Lincoln Townley, whom she later married. He grew up in Newcastle and Cheshire with his younger brother Louis. His brother was inspired by him and is now a YouTube musician.

Matthew attended Wilmslow High School, where he began jamming with pals Ross MacDonald, Adam Hann and George Daniel in 2004.
