Spoilers for ‘Masters of the Air’ Episode 2

LONDON, ENGLAND: In contrast to the first episode, Apple TV+’s ‘Masters of the Air’ Episode 2 is slightly lighter and offers more character development than the first episode, which focussed more on establishing the brutality of war and introducing several characters. Nevertheless, there’s enough action in ‘Masters of the Air’ Episode 2 to look forward to.

However, in the star-studded cast which includes the likes of Austin Butler and Barry Keoghan, Callum Turner shines through with his character, Major John Egan, as he portrays the struggles after and amid battle, only in a slightly different way as compared to Butler’s character, Gale Cleven.

Many men have been lost already. The first mission portrayed in ‘Masters of the Air’ Episode 1 was brutal in every way possible, with several planes shot down, and even more men killed.

The different characters are coping with this loss in their own ways, but John Egan has a different struggle altogether.

Curtis Biddick, played by Barry Keoghan, and Egan decide to have some drinks together and find themselves alone at the top of one of the planes. John breaks a few bottles of alcohol, clearly a little intoxicated before he asks Curtis if he “feels anything.”

After Curtis admits that he misses the men they lost, John admits that he doesn’t feel a thing.

In this conversation, we see the character development of John, who is struggling with his demons after he asks Curtis to punch him, hoping to see whether or not he can feel that, as opposed to the emotions.

After a brief kerfuffle, Curtis lands a punch, which is definitely felt by John. “I felt that, Curt. I felt that,” says John after letting out a scream. This is only the start of ‘Masters of the Air’ Episode 2, and viewers get to see a lot more of John for the rest of it too.

A lighter episode with a darker ending

As mentioned before, ‘Masters of the Air’ Episode 2 was slightly lighter as compared to the first. There was more singing, dancing, laughter, banter, and much more in the second of the episode, but it still managed to end on a darker note, in contrast to most of the episode.

Amid a bike race between the men, sirens are heard at night, and they are all forced to seek shelter as they watch bombs drop onto a base close to them, hinting it could be them next.

In this scene, Gale Cleven and John Egan are reunited for another moment filled with vulnerability, which again confirms the speculation of how ‘Masters of the Air’ Episode 2 focuses heavily on character development.

‘Masters of the Air’ Episode 2 is now streaming on Apple TV+
