Maryland community mourns as family of 4, including grandparents and grandson die in a tragic 3-car crash

CARROLL COUNTY, MARYLAND: A three-car crash in Carroll County, Maryland, claimed the lives of four people, including a grandson and his grandparents, on Saturday afternoon, November.

The collision occurred when a Saturn rear-ended a Chevrolet Equinox that was trying to make a left turn, pushing it into the path of a Ford F-350 coming from the opposite direction.

Who were the Maryland three-car crash victims? 

The driver of the Equinox, Charles Black III, 72, his wife, Barbara Black, 69, and Debbie Hill, 63, were pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.

Gage Black, 17, and Phillip Ceresa, 15, who were also in the Equinox, were flown to a hospital in Baltimore where Gage later succumbed to his injuries.

Charles and Barbara were Gage Black’s grandparents and Debbi was Barbara’s sister.

Phillip’s condition is said to be unknown as hospital authorities reportedly refused to share the details as he is a minor, according to the Baltimore Sun. Police have also not revealed his condition for now.

Gage Black and Phillip Ceresa were students at Francis Scott Key High School

Gage and Phillip, who is also known as 'Flip' Ceresa, were students at Francis Scott Key High School they were involved in wrestling and lacrosse programs.

Ryan Kimble, the school’s athletic director, according to the report, said they were “absolutely devastated” by the loss of the two teens.

The school football team wrote that they were "mourning the loss of Gage Black and multiple members of his family," in a tragic accident.

A GoFundMe fundraiser set up by the community said, “On Saturday, November 4, our community suffered an unimaginable tragedy and loss. Due to injuries sustained in an accident, Heather's family and our community lost four amazing people. Charles Black III, his wife Barbara Black, his wife’s sister Debbie Hill, and their grandson Gage Black."

The Maryland State Police Crash Team is leading the investigation into the cause of the crash.

The driver of the Ford 59-year-old identified as Jeffrey Burdette of Mt Airy, which hit Chevrolet, was also injured and was transported to a hospital with undisclosed injuries.  

The state police said they will submit their findings to the Carroll County State’s Attorney’s Office who will determine if any charges will be filed in this case.

“Investigators do not believe that impaired driving was a factor in this crash,” according to state police.
