Marvel's 'Runaways' roundup: Who's possessed, who isn't and where the team stands ahead of Season 3

The Runaways are scattered, and one of them may be possessed by a member of Jonah's family, and new threats arise after the fall of the Pride.
UPDATED NOV 26, 2019

Marvel’s ‘Runaways’ returns this December for its third and final season. The trailer promises this to be the craziest season yet. But before that, it’s worth taking a look at Season 2 or at least the events most pertinent to the upcoming season. After all, one of the kids has an alien consciousness buried somewhere deep in their heads, one who appears the most dangerous of all. With the team scattered, and some of its members getting serious power upgrades, the Runaways’ greatest threat may just come from within.

Who’s an alien and who isn’t?

In a confrontation with their parents, the Runaways destroyed Jonah’s (Julian McMahon) alien ship, which contained the rest of Jonah’s family, albeit in the natural energy forms. Jonah’s corporeal form was destroyed as well. Jonah and the other three members of his family secretly survived, though, by possessing the bodies of those closest to them. By the end of Season 2, it’s been confirmed that Jonah is possessing Victor Chase (James Marsters), Jonah’s wife inhabits Stacey Yorke (Brigid Brannagh) and their daughter controls Tina Minoru (Brittany Ishibashi). They’re missing Jonah’s son, and believe that he’s not inhabiting one of the Pride, but one of the Runaways kids.

Scattered Runaways, broken Pride

The Season 2 finale saw both the show’s rival teams broken up in a big way. With Chase (Gregg Sulkin) and Karolina (Virginia Gardner) in feeding tubes to sustain Jonah’s family, and Gertrude (Ariela Barer) and Old Lace kidnapped by Dale (Kevin Weisman), it’s going to take some work to get the Runaways back together in the first place.

In the meanwhile, the Pride as an organization has been completely shattered. The Van Wilders have been arrested, three of the Pride’s members are possessed by aliens, and of course, Dale has fled the coop with his daughter and genetically altered dinosaur. It’s safe to say that the Pride is no longer a real threat - but the Runaways aren’t running short of enemies anytime soon.

Season 3: As dark as it gets

The Season 3 trailer shows a dark future in store for the Runaways.

With the Pride out of the way, Jonah’s alien family is all set to make their power play, and whatever it is, it’s probably not good news for the people of Earth. The most dangerous of them all is yet to reveal himself, and which of the Runaways he’s possessing. In the meanwhile, villainess of Arthurian legend, Morgan le Fay (Elizabeth Hurley), apparently has her own plans for the world, and an army to back it up.

Nico, Karolina, and Gertrude are all shown to be growing more powerful, as they explore the limits of just what they can do. Nico, however, seems to be going down the darkest path of all, as the Staff has her channel a source powerful enough to catch the eye of Morgan herself. Morgan isn’t the only one sensing Nico’s growth in power, as it grabs the notice of Cloak (Aubrey Joseph) and Dagger (Olivia Holt), who will be making their crossover appearance this episode from Marvel’s canceled ‘Cloak & Dagger.’

All in all, things have never been more tumultuous for the Runaways. With this being the final season, the stakes have never been higher, as the team faces challenges unlike any before.

Season 3 of Marvel’s ‘Runaways’ releases December 13 on Hulu.
