'Dawn of X': Marvel's new 'Cable' series could revitalize the quintessentially '90s character for 2020

Cable has very little to interest the modern reader but with his rebellious streak, the younger Cable may just manage to make the character popular again

Nathan Summers aka Cable is one of those characters who regularly top lists for the most quintessentially '90s comic book heroes. This bitter veteran from the future may have been cool when leather jackets and giant guns were all you needed to get fans to like you but since the end of the '90s, his popularity has taken a bit of a hit.

However, with the new 'Dawn of X' relaunch and the upcoming 'Cable' series, Nathan might just find himself back at the forefront of Marvel Comics once again.

Cable made a popular appearance in 'Deadpool 2', played by none other than MCU Thanos Josh Brolin (minus the purple skin and metal arm). Since then, interest in the character has gone up, which is probably why Marvel decided to give the character his first solo series since 2017. However, the Cable who will be at the center of the upcoming series couldn't be more different from the one we all know.

While Cable has usually been portrayed as a much older man, the current version of the character is still young and inexperienced. He has, however, still got his characteristic love for giant guns and explosions. Kid Cable has been featured in a number of books since 'Dawn of X', including the main 'X-Men' book and 'Fallen Angels' in which he joins X-23 and Psylocke to face a technological horror.

During those appearances, he has been shown as a badass on par with his older self but with a sense of humor and a refreshingly youthful perspective on the world. In all respects, this Cable is a teenager with a destiny that spans the ages and he acts like it, which is a far more interesting take on the character than the Rambo-esque antihero he is usually portrayed as.

In all honesty, Cable, as he was at the time of his introduction in 1990, hasn't really aged well and has little to interest the modern reader. But the younger Cable, with his rebellious streak and penchant for explosions, may just manage to make the character popular again.

Marvel has released preview pages for the upcoming 'Cable' #1 by Gerry Duggan and Phil Noto via CBR and it appears the story starts off with the character dishing out a beatdown to Wolverine of all people. If that's not impressive, what is?

Here's the official solicitation for the upcoming issue: "Cable was a grizzled old veteran of the wars to save the future… and he will be again. But for now, he's a young mutant living in paradise leading a life of adventure! Nathan Summers, son of two of the most powerful mutants on Krakoa, has a destiny leading the youth of mutantkind in rebellion… so why not start now? Gerry Duggan (MARAUDERS, DEADPOOL) and Phil Noto (STAR WARS, POE DAMERON) bring us young Cable as we've never seen him before!"

'Cable' #1 will hit stands on March 11.
