Marjorie Taylor Greene tries to troll Rosa DeLauro over her age, she didn't expect what happened next

WASHINGTON, DC: In a spirited exchange on Tuesday, November 14, Representative Rosa DeLauro delivered what she termed "a basic level lesson in civics" to fellow House member Marjorie Taylor Greene.

The exchange unfolded after Greene, a Republican, suggested that the 80-year-old Democrat DeLauro had forgotten the recent House vote on a funding bill due to her age.

The House successfully passed legislation, supported by Speaker Mike Johnson, extending government funding beyond Friday, November 17,  and averting a partial government shutdown. Notably, 93 GOP lawmakers dissented and voted against the bill.

Johnson proposed a "clean" continuing resolution, extending five spending bills until January 19 and an additional seven until February 2, without demanding cuts in government expenditure, as some Republicans had sought.

Following the House's decision, Greene criticized DeLauro, asserting, "My Democrat colleague across the aisle, who's 80 years old and has been here over 30 years, just said we're on the verge of a shutdown. She probably just forgot that a few hours ago, she voted for the continuing resolution that will extend the budget, and we are not on the verge of a shutdown. So, I just wanted to note that for the record."

In response, DeLauro clarified that the legislation was yet to pass the Senate or receive approval from President Joe Biden.

"It may be that the gentlelady doesn't know that there is another body attached to the US Congress called the United States Senate, and they have to vote on the continuing resolution. And when they vote on it, we'll find out what it is that they do with regard to this continuing resolution passed by the House, which, quite frankly, is flawed to a fare-thee-well in meeting our obligations, both domestic and international," DeLauro retorted.

"And by the way, it isn't a law of the land until the president of the United States signs it. That may be a basic-level lesson in civics. There is the House, there is the Senate, and there is the president[...]It's the law of the land, which my colleagues on the other side of the aisle have dismissed, walked away from, and quite frankly, don't understand the process of government," she added.

Social media reactions

Social media was quick to react to the exchange, with many users mocking Greene.

"MTG trying to shame anyone is especially laughable," one posted on X (formerly Twitter).

"MTG has absolutely no diplomacy in her interactions with people. Diplomacy is a basic need in any profession. And the simple fact that MTG is trying to age-shame this woman is so inappropriate. Notice how much knowledge Rep. Rosa DeLauro has, and her experience put MTG in her place," another wrote.

"Well, to be fair.. ....someone needed to school Marjorie Taylor Greene at some point," someone else added.

However, there were also those who ripped into DeLauro.

"Rosa DeLauro is an embarrassment, and I’m not referring to the way she chooses to look. The final tally was 336 in favor and 95 opposed, with 127 Republicans joining 209 Democrats to pass the bill. Only TWO Dems voted NO… So for her to imply the Senate may not approve this is LUDICROUS," one wrote.

"@SenSchumer and @LeaderMcConnell have been salivating over this. What makes crazy old hippie think the Senate is going to reject it?" a comment read.

"What is DeLauro? A swamp creature? Halloween is over," another quipped.

That said, Tuesday also witnessed the House blocking Greene's attempt to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, with eight Republicans siding with Democrats to reject the resolution.

Following this, Greene expressed her displeasure on Twitter, stating, "Shame on the eight Republicans who voted with Democrats to kill my articles of impeachment against Secretary Mayorkas."

Tuesday's political drama extended beyond verbal sparring, as two separate confrontations involving Republican lawmakers unfolded.

GOP Senator Markwayne Mullin challenged Teamsters General President Sean O'Brien to a fight during a Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee hearing, eventually drawing intervention from Chair Bernie Sanders.

Additionally, Representative Tim Burchett claimed to have been "elbowed" by fellow Republican Representative Kevin McCarthy in a corridor. McCarthy denied the allegation, describing it as a misunderstanding in a tight hallway, Newsweek reported.

The latest incident adds to a recent fact-check on Greene, who faced scrutiny earlier in the month when she included Confederate General Robert E Lee in her defense of a bill aiming to prevent the removal of federal statues and monuments depicting the Founding Fathers, The New Republic reported.
