GRINZANE CAVOUR, ITALY: Mario Roggero, an Italian jeweler, will be tried for homicide after he discharged a firearm on a gang of robbers and killed two after they looted his boutique and tied up his daughter. The incident unfolded on April 28 in Grinzane Cavour after three men, armed with a knife and a pistol, raided 67-year-old Roggero's store.

The three men threatened Roggero and his family while tying up his daughter with her hands behind her. However, he later found out that the robbers were using a fake weapon. As they attempted to flee with the stolen goods, he gave chase with his gun.

Mario Roggero fired five shots at the gang. Gang members Andrea Spinelli from Bra and Giuseppe Mazzarino from Turin died from their wounds a few meters from the shop entrance, according to Daily Mail. One of them was found dead in the middle of the street while the other was found on the corner of the side street. The third thief, who was also injured, was later taken to hospital after attempting to flee the scene.

However, Roggero has been accused of culpable excess of self-defense and will be tried for murder. The public prosecutor's office claimed that he chased the three robbers after they had already fled the store with the looted goods. Roggero is accused of shooting from a close range "with the intention of causing their death, thereby voluntarily exceeding the limits of legitimate patrimonial defence," reported the source.

"I'm sorry something like this happened, it's very bad, but it's either me or them," said the owner shortly after the attempted robbery. "With my right hand I opened the case, with my left the drawer where I knew my weapon was and simultaneously we found ourselves pointing at each other. I had to... then they ran away." Roggero's boutique was earlier robbed on May 22, 2015, when two thieves, one of them disguised as a woman, entered the shop and tied him up with plastic ties after beating him savagely.
