'Manifest' season 2? Jeff Rake's show has to be renewed to solve the mystery of Montego Air Flight 828
The show might not have received a nod from the network for renewal yet, but chances are it will return for a second season
'Manifest' might not be on NBC's renewal list for the 2019-20 TV season just yet, but there are chances that the series will return with a second season. The Jeff Rake-created mystery drama has been following in the aftermath of the sudden re-appearance of Montego Air Flight 828 which went missing almost five and a half years ago.
Starring Josh Dallas as Ben Stone, Melissa Roxburgh as Michaela Stone, Jack Messina as Cal Stone, Athena Karkanis as Grace, and Parveen Kaur as Saanvi Bahl, the series revolves around the lives of the passengers who hadn't aged a day while the plane was missing. In spite of weaving a story on such an interesting premise, 'Manifest' has been unable to hold on to the massive viewership it had during the premiere which saw a 2.2 rating among adults in between the age group of 18 to 49 years.
However, over the course of the first season, the 16-episode long series suffered a drastic drop in ratings which fell to a minimum of 1.0 and 0.9, which is its current rating after Monday night's episode. In spite of the drop in ratings, the show still has a good chance of renewal as it continues to be the "season's no. 1 freshman drama" for NBC. Considering where the story is at, at this point in the show, chances are the mystery of the missing plane will not be solved in one season.
The mystery about the strange voices continues to loom large on the show. The passengers were hearing strange voices in their heads, which they interpret as "Callings", after they got off the plane. Over the course of the first episode, we saw how each passenger was being led to a certain destination by the "Callings".
For instance, in the third episode, we saw Ben receiving a "Calling" about a man who has been separated from his son. The voice in Ben's head compels him to meet the man, and we know, under some strange turn of events, Ben manages to help the man reunite with his son, who was imprisoned under false charges.

The "Callings" continue to play the role of a major character on the show, and up until Episode 14, we only saw the "Callings" being treated as an omnipresent mysterious being, who seem to hold the reins of the passengers' lives. It is almost impossible for the show to wrap up the mystery in just two remaining episodes. There are still new characters coming in, about who we know nothing. There are several plot-holes which still need to be addressed in order for the mystery to reach a conclusion.
Moreover, we still have to know the Major's intention behind hunting down Cal, who is apparently the Holy Grail on the show. Rake himself earlier mentioned a six-year plan for the show, and it is only fair a mystery thriller needs to run for atleast five seasons to come up with a solution to the problem.
'Manifest' returns to NBC February 11 at 10 pm.
