'Manifest': Cal, the hidden protagonist, might just be the Holy Grail and the clue to unraveling the show's mystery

NBC's Jeff Rake-created show, 'Manifest', is back after a long fall break and this time there is a new addition to the puzzle. While previously the characters, including the Stone siblings, Dr. Saanvi Bahl, and the rest of the crew from Montego Air Flight 828, were chasing after the "Callings" that were driving them to carry out certain duties, this time they are introduced to the final clue. While Episode 11 left us with the clue that the unnamed Major was in search for the Holy Grail, Episode 12 will probably be able to expose who or what the Holy Grail actually is.

We are rooting for Jack Messina's character, Cal. Starring alongside Josh Dallas (as Ben Stone), Melissa Roxburgh (Michaela Stone), Parveen Kaur (Saanvi Bahl), Athena Karkanis (Grace), and J.R. Ramirez (Jared), Messina's character has been left under the covers for too long, but there was always some clue hinting at Cal being the real protagonist of the show.

'Manifest' mainly revolves around the Stone family and the mystery is gradually unfolding itself in context to the family. Although for the longest time, the narrative structure was considered as just a lazy way of storytelling, Episode 11 proved that the Stone family is actually in the middle of it all, especially Cal.

While Ben and Michaela have been following the "Callings" as obediently as possible, Cal has practically driven his own "Callings". Struck by clairsensitive powers, Cal is able to predict the future and can tell the outcome of things even before they happen.

Episode 11 saw Captain Daly (Frank Deal) try to clear his name since he was being blamed for the sudden disappearance of the plane, but it was only Cal who thanked him for bringing them all back home. Cal always knew things, and it is assumed that his ridiculous brilliance was the result of the "Calling" that he received on the plane, way before anybody else did.

Cal has also been the one who was always aware of people's intentions, and he would state his opinion through drawings and sketches. The promo trailer for Episode 12 reveals that Ben discovers Cal's sketchbook, and he realizes that his son actually draws the future since he had even drawn an image of Ben going through his sketchbook.

Fans on Reddit are wondering if, with Captain Daly, Cal too traveled five years ahead into 2024. A fan mentioned, "Is it possible that he traveled back in time? I found it interesting that the package to Ben said "captain" on it, and the pilot had just called him that before he left."

Cal might just be the Holy Grail since he is someone who knows what happened on the plane. He is probably the only one from the plane who actually benefitted from the time lapse. Suffering from leukemia, Cal was not supposed to live beyond two years, but when the plane skipped five years, he returned to a world which now had a cure for cancer. Things worked in Cal's favor, and we can be sure that he will serve as a major clue on the show. 'Manifest' airs on NBC every Monday at 10 pm.
