California man accused of murdering missing girlfriend after he rapped about killing her at an open mic
MONROVIA, CALIFORNIA: A 27-year-old man was arrested after being accused of murdering his ex-girlfriend, whose body is yet to be found.
The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced that Robert Anthony Camou, 27, was charged with capital murder on September 4 after his former girlfriend Amanda Custer, 31, disappeared in July. The charge included a special circumstance allegation of killing a witness and according to authorities, he committed the crime while out on bail.
At the time of the victim's disappearance, Camou was on bail and had several charges filed against him on May 29, which involved his then ex-girlfriend. The charges were filed after an incident on April 22, where the accused allegedly strangled Custer and also threatened her with a taser.
He then followed her as she ran to into her home. When an elderly woman tried to intervene, Camou attacked her, Deputy District Attorney Melanie Drew told CBS Los Angeles.
He has a criminal history that included one felony count each of first-degree burglary, injuring a girlfriend, and assault by means of force likely to produce great bodily injury and one misdemeanor count of battery.
The police believe that Custer was killed around July 29.
A witness told the police that Camou was seen placing the woman’s limp body in the trunk of his Toyota Prius. After searching his home, the police found traces of blood along with a tarp and a digging tool. The police found more blood in the trunk of his car.
The suspect was also filmed rapping about murdering and burying his ex-girlfriend during his performance at an open mic on the day that Custer was reported missing. "I killed my b***h and buried that b***h in the f**king dirt," he was heard rapping.
Michael Moore, who shot the video at The King Eddy Saloon in Los Angeles, said he was stunned by what he was listening to.
“In my own words, it was ‘kill the… and bury her in the dirt,'” said Moore. “Everybody kind of looked around, and looked at each other, and continued with the evening.”
Camou then “mentioned something about the police and that he needed to close his mouth now, and he walked off," Moore said.
Soon after the video was brought to the attention of the police, the suspect was arrested after a nearly five-hour standoff in downtown Los Angeles. Camou faces death or life in prison without the possibility of parole if convicted.
