WASHINGTON, DC: Rep Mike Johnson has officially been picked as the new House Speaker nominee, just hours after Tom Emmer dropped his bid from the race, reported CNN.

The decision has been made after a long period following Kevin McCarthy’s ousting as Speaker of the House, which took place after Rep Matt Gaetz filed a motion to vacate.

Following that, Jim Jordan’s likelihood of becoming Speaker increased, however, after multiple failed ballots, the baton has finally been passed on to Johnson.

Despite Gaetz’s previous support for Jordan, who was also endorsed by former president Donald Trump, there has been a shift as Gaetz has announced his “complete and total endorsement” for Johnson as Speaker, and the internet agrees.

On October 24, 2023, the vote for Mike Johnson came at the end of a “tumultuous day” that began when Republicans voted to elect Minnesota Rep Tom Emmer as speaker nominee, only for him to drop out just hours later.

According to the aforementioned CNN report, in the final round of secret ballot voting, Johnson was elected as the speaker nominee with 128 votes.

Rep Matt Gaetz, who previously showed his support for Jim Jordan, took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to extend his support for Johnson.

Gaetz wrote, “@RepMikeJohnson has my Complete and Total Endorsement for Speaker of the House!”

In addition, Gaetz also quoted Johnson, who said, “‘It was worth it.’- Speaker-Designate @RepMikeJohnson.”

Gaetz also shared a video of Johnson’s statement, originally shared by C-SPAN, where the Speaker nominee said, “Democracy is messy sometimes, but it is our system. This conference that you see, this House Republican majority, is united.”

Internet responds to Matt Gaetz’s endorsement of Mike Johnson

Internet was quick to respond after the news broke out, and Rep Matt Gaetz shared his support for Mike Johnson. One social media user wrote, “This I can support. I really hope you didn't vote for Emmer.”

“Anything is better than McCarthy or Emmer,” wrote one user, while another said, “He will be a great #SpeakerOfHouse.”

The Internet showed support for Johnson as one user on X wrote, “Far better than McCarthy so this would be a win.”

Another said, “Bravo! He is so much better than McCarthy! You are responsible for this win!”

Some users even called Johnson a “major upgrade.” “He’s a significantly more America First Republican than McCarthy. A major upgrade as House Speaker,” one social media user wrote.
