FIRUZABAD, IRAN: A stray gunshot during a round of celebratory shooting killed a bride during her own wedding. The freak accident took place at the wedding hall in Firuzabad, Iran. According to reports, Mahvash Leghaei, 24, had just exchanged vows when a male guest decided to commemorate the event by using his unlicensed high-powered hunting rifle, which is banned in Iran.

Unfortunately, the shooter’s festive firearm display, in which he allegedly used an unlicensed hunting rifle, backfired horribly. While the first shot went off without incident, a second round reportedly went through Leghaei’s skull and brain before hitting two male guests, according to reports.

According to Colonel Mehdi Jokar, an Iranian police spokesperson, “We had an emergency call of a shooting at a wedding hall in Firuzabad city, and officers were dispatched immediately.” Jokar blamed crowds and poor control of the weapon for the tragedy. The bride later fell into a coma and died from her injuries, while the other two victims only suffered minor wounds.

After the incident, the shooter has been identified as a 36-year-old but has not been formally named, while local reports claim he was a cousin of the groom. The shooter is said to have fled the scene with the weapon in hand but was quickly arrested by police. Jokar said, “Naturally, any disturbance of public order like this crosses the red line with the police, and people need to know that to create a safe community, shooting is banned at weddings. We will take tough action against anybody found to be breaking this rule.”

Wedding festivities are meant to be joyous occasions, yet a startlingly high number of them end tragically due to the dangerous custom of celebratory gunfire. Sometimes unintentional deaths and injuries from bullets are caused by this practice. Bullets are fired as part of a tradition at certain weddings to formally greet newlyweds in various countries. The custom of firing a gun at weddings is still common in the Middle East, despite being illegal.

Meanwhile, according to the Daily Mail, Leghaei worked as a social worker who assisted drug addicts in overcoming their addictions before she passed away. In line with her wishes, the victim’s family has since donated her organs to three recipients and Leghaei has now been buried at a local cemetery.
