'Lost in Space' Season 2 Episode 4: 'Scarecrow' holds on tight to the unpredictability factor with alien robots and tougher missions
This review contains spoilers for Ep. 4: 'Scarecrow'
Just in case you were wondering if there are scarecrows in space, 'Lost in Space' Season 2 manages to convince you there are. And their scarecrows are a race of alien robots with far advanced technology. And partly because the humans have found a raggedy, broken one. The Robinsons are a sort of local heroes among the colonists primarily due to their share of space adventures. The episode is pretty much a rush as it sees the family split on their missions after being assigned various tasks. The Resolute, now being inhabitable means the colonists have to find a new living and an alien planet is a refuge.
With water becoming a major source of concern, the task to help the drillers falls on John (Toby Stephens). Also interesting is the science behind these missions as they lend a sense of credibility. The Jupiter in the meantime is being researched upon for any trace of alien robot remnants. Elsewhere, things don't look too bright for Parkey Posey's Dr. Smith as the Radic arrest her. And that too just when the third episode established she was actually trying to make amends.
More mysteries unfold as John and the team of diggers realize the rigging equipment is weakened by a material that pulls the strength off the metal. This also meant any water coming from the well would be contaminated. Judy (Taylor Russell) manages to stop the water from being transported to the Jupiter in the last minute with some help from Don, however, John gets trapped inside the well filled with debris.
Meanwhile, Will (Maxwell Jenkins) attempts to connect with the Scarecrow and gives it the piece of its arm that it was missing while Maureen, despite attempting to help the team in reconfiguring the Resolute's APS struggles to focus. However, trouble erupts as Will the Scarecrow attempts to attack him. As far as Ben Adler goes, his character so far with two episodes down is a complete mystery as he is shown to have been attacked by the robots.
In what comes as a surprise, although a tad bit late, the Robot is shown to be alive and residing in the alien planet the colonists have taken refuge in. Last we saw, he and the SAR battled out in space and crash-landed into the engine room of the Resolute. 'Scarecrow' is that episode where the momentum gradually shows promise of picking up and it does so with a blend of action and an air of mystery that it still has to clear. For now, 'Lost in Space' Season 2 manages to stay unpredictable and we're sincerely hoping it intends to carry on in the same vein.
'Lost in Space' Season 2 is available for streaming on Netflix.
