'Lost in Space': The 3 most important questions posed by season 2 finale of Netflix show

It is uncertain if Dr. Smith is dead. Viewers of the show know her to be the most resourceful of the bunch. It is likely that she could have managed to escape what seemed like inevitable death -- she has done that before. Also, it would be a bad move to kill Dr. Smith.

Netflix’s ‘Lost in Space’ season two’s finale titled ‘Ninety-Seven’ began with Jupiter 2 landing on the Amber planet where Ben Adler (J.J. Feild) and Will (Maxwell Jenkins) assumed that the lightning would heal Scarecrow, the robot.

But things soon went very wrong. As Ben dragged Scarecrow to the spot, the lightning arrived and struck Ben and Scarecrow. The very next moment, we saw multiple robots glowing.

Meanwhile, the captain received a comms message saying that some Jupiters had been attacked. Even as Hastings (Douglas Hodge) wanted to start moving the ship fearing an attack, Will's robot refused to direct them to Alpha Centauri, repeatedly saying “Will Robinson”. Finally, Maureen (Molly Parker) took out Hastings with an electric rod.

Maureen decided then to let the robots board the ship and subsequently trap them. The robots breached the ship. When they reached the trap, Maureen hit the weapon button which froze them all but did not kill them. At the same time, the captain announced hundreds of alien ships were headed their way and would reach them in under two hours.

When one of the robots managed to open the airlock, Dr. Smith (Parker Posey) offered to fix it, despite the apparent dangers. She failed and for the time being, it appeared as if she died in the process.

In a skirmish that followed, Scarecrow tried to protect Will and took on the other robots. He was defeated and destroyed. Maureen’s plan then was to intentionally reroute the Resolute into a collision course with the debris outside. When the Resolute hit the debris, tearing it into pieces, the children make it through in their Jupiter.

All appeared to be fine. They believed they had reached Alpha Centauri. But true to ‘Lost in Space’ form, there was a twist. Alpha Centauri looked different from the photos they had seen. They found that the planet they were supposed to go to looked half destroyed. When Will checked the radar signature their ship had followed, it turned out to be from a ship called the Fortuna -- the same ship that got lost 20 years ago and was commanded by Judy’s (Taylor Russell’s) biological father, Grant Kelly.

There is a lot to unpack here in terms of season three of the epic space adventure show. First, it is uncertain if Dr. Smith is dead. Viewers of the show know her to be the most resourceful of the bunch. It is likely that she could have managed to escape what seemed like inevitable death -- she has done that before. Also, it would be a bad move to kill Dr. Smith off, after all, she is one of the most interesting characters on the show. An anti-hero among all the goody-goody folks, especially the Robinson family.

Another mystery left wide open for interpretation (and will possibly be answered in season three) is where exactly have they reached. Is it Alpha Centauri at all? And if not, then how far away from their intended final destination are they?

And finally, the biggest question the show will hopefully address in the next season is the reason behind Will’s weird connection with robots.

‘Lost in Space’ season two is available for viewing on Netflix.
