WEST ISLIP, LONG ISLAND: A newly-hired nurse was fired at NICO after a horrified father witnessed his newborn baby boy being slammed face-down into a bassinet by the caregiver. The tragic incident took place at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip, Long Island, when the baby's father, Fidel Sinclair, came by because he wanted to check in on his infant son Nikko.

Fidel Sinclair said he had gone to check on his two-day-old son Nikko and was recording a video of him crying when he witnessed the eye-popping incident that he claims "broke him." The parents of Nikko swiftly alerted the hospital and the nurse was terminated. The parent's ordeal was reported to the Department of Health and the fired nurse will be under further review.

What really happened at the hospital?

Two-day-old Nikko was under the care of NICU and was being treated with antibiotics when Sinclair noticed his son being forcefully slammed face-first into his bassinet. Nikko's mom Consuelo Saravia confronted the nurse and told her, "I don't want you to touch my child! You just slammed him," according to NBC New York, that first reported the incident. She claims the nurse responded by saying, "Oh no, if you think I mishandled him or anything, I'm sorry."

Saravia swiftly alerted other nurses and hospital administrators of the negligent care. A spokesperson at Good Samaritan Hospital told the parents, the nurse was a "recent hire" and was terminated following the incident. "Upon learning of this incident, swift and immediate action was taken, including conducting an investigation and consequently terminating the individual involved," said the hospital official, adding that the fired nurse was also reported to the Department of Health for further review. "Keeping our patients safe remains our paramount concern," said the official, according to a Daily Mail report.

'It just broke me!'

"I don’t know, it just broke me," said Nikko's father Sinclair. "I didn’t know what to do." He added, "If it wasn’t for God who sent me to check on him we would have never seen any of that happen. And it would have kept happening overnight not only to him but the other babies too." The New York State Department of Health said they have launched an open investigation and are taking the "disturbing allegation seriously," but could not comment further. "All hospital complaints are kept confidential and at the conclusion of an investigation the outcome is shared with the complainant," they said.
