#LizzoIsOverParty: Lizzo fans defend ‘plus-size Black’ singer as sexual jokes on BTS, Harry Styles resurface
Lizzo isn't new to controversies. The 32-year-old singer has been involved in one too many issues, from facing countersuit over 'Truth Hurts' credits to getting called out for sharing pictures of her bare back on social media sites. For the past few days, Lizzo has become the latest victim of Twitter's infamous cancel culture with fans trending #LizzoIsOverParty after a few old comments that she made about K-Pop band BTS and One Direction's former member Harry Styles re-surfaced on the Internet.
The 'Boys' singer is undeniably one of the most vocal celebrities in the industry. Just like her songs, Lizzo has never shied away from presenting her opinion about matters that are considered "too intimate" to be talked about. In 2019, Lizzo was severely criticized by BTS fans for her comments regarding the K-pop boy band's song 'Boy With Luv', which was played during CBC's Music game of 'Jam or Not a Jam'. On hearing the track she reportedly said, "Now I know why people sleep outside in tents for days. That was sexy. That was sexual, actually." However, the BTS Army was of the opinion that Lizzo's comments directed at the band members were "inappropriate."
Exactly a year later, she once again received immense backlash for joking about getting intimate with Styles. Prior to her performance with Styles for the 2020 Brit Awards, the singer appeared on the UK's 'KISS Breakfast With Tom & Daisy' radio show. During the interview, when the host asked Lizzo about a collaboration with Styles, she responded saying, "We collabed," joking about having slept with the Styles the previous night. She, however, provided clarification immediately and said that she was only kidding.
However, some Twitter users recently started trending #LizzoIsOverParty after her "sexual" jokes and comments re-surfaced on the Internet. The trend has divided the Internet as it has garnered a wide range of reactions. While some are strongly condemning Lizzo, her fans have come to her rescue saying the cancel culture is targeting her simply because she a Black woman who has well-established herself in the music industry. One agitated fan wrote, "Yall just want a reason to cancel a beautiful successful black woman. it’s disgusting how misogynistic yall are and im so over it. if harry was uncomfortable with lizzo you know damn well he would’ve said something. directioners need to stfu #LizzoIsOverParty."
