In episode 6 of Apple TV+’s musical drama ‘Little Voice’, we saw Bess (Brittany O’Grady) feel utterly lost. She could not bear not being with the man she loved, Ethan (Sean Teale), who was already with someone else.

Her unwillingness to reconcile with what she felt and what the reality was led her to lash out on others. She lashed out at her best friend and roommate Prisha (Shalini Bathina) when she tried to tell Bess that she was worried about her. She lashed out at Samuel (Colton Ryan) when he tried to talk sense to her. She lashed out at a customer she was supposed to serve at the bar.

But if Bess’ lashing out was worrying, it was nothing compared to the self-destructive path she was on. Like her father, it seemed Bess too had a drinking problem. And inebriated, Bess made some questionable choices, like hanging out with the producer Jeremy (Luke Kirby) after getting very drunk -- against Samuel’s better advice.

While Bess did reach home, we don’t know what happened between her and Jeremy. Because the next day at the studio, Jeremy kept making sexual innuendos at her. While she shouted at Samuel that she “did not f***” Jeremy," both seemed uncertain of that statement. So, where does the story go next?

Episode 7 of ‘Little Voice’ is titled ‘Ghost Light’. For those who don’t know, a ghost light is an electric light that is left energized at the center of a stage in a theater when the theater is unoccupied. It’s kept to make sure that the theater is not completely dark.

In the context of ‘Little Voice’, this can mean a number of things. For one, it can be about Bess’ brother Louie (Kevin Valdez), a theater nerd who is on the spectrum. Will the episode focus on Louie? It would make sense considering episode 6 saw Louie face the enormous disappointment of a ruined birthday with molten ice-cream cake and no gifts. It could also mean that Bess might have a bigger performance ahead of her.

But thematically, it could simply mean that Bess, who is at this moment completely lost in the darkness, might just find her own ghost light, something that would help her reach the shore. Something or someone that would help bring her life back on track.

And the only person who seems capable of that is Samuel. The musician only cares for Bess, even though his blunt ways might not make it apparent to her. He is the only one concerned about Jeremy’s entirely inappropriate behavior. Maybe, he will end up making things right there, helping Bess realize that Samuel, not Ethan, might be the right person for her.

Yes, Bess’ life is a mess right now -- just as she described it to Ethan in episode 1 -- but it doesn’t mean it will always remain that way. In more ways than one, ‘Little Voice’ is a hopeful show. And in that spirit, one can only hope that things get better for our troubled heroine.

New episodes of ‘Little Voice’ drop every Friday, only on Apple TV+.
