CHICO, CALIFORNIA: The lifeless body of a man covered in wounds and wrapped in plastic was found dumped in a shopping cart outside a California supermarket. The horrific discovery was made on Sunday, March 12.

The body was located outside Food Maxx, a grocery on Martin Luther King Jr Parkway in Chico, a community located about 80 miles north of Sacramento. A passerby made the grim discovery and when he noted someone inside the cart appeared to be dead and he called 911.

'Police have launched a homicide investigation'

The cart containing the body wrapped in a sizeable white plastic sheet was discovered by police officers close to the entrance of the grocery store, according to the Chico police department. Paramedics pronounced the man deceased at the site. Police said that the dead body had been lying in the cart for several days. The unidentified male's body had visible injuries which prompted the police to launch a homicide investigation.

Detective Lieutenant Brian Miller told Action News, "There was obviously some suspicious circumstances - body was found wrapped in plastic in a shopping cart and there were some apparent injuries that were reported and so a homicide investigation was initiated."

He said that they were close to revealing the circumstances under which the body was dumped by using surveillance camera footage and tracing blood stains. "We were able to see some movement. We were able to see a shopping cart, a suspect and the decedent moving on the sidewalk here. We came back out here to take a second look," Miller said.

'The cart was there for days'

Investigators combed the area on Monday afternoon, March 13, and collected stain samples from the ground. "The indication we have, the cart was there for days. I don't know how long but the cart was placed over there by the entrance for days," Miller said.
