With Kanye West making headlines recently over his budding friendship with President Donald Trump and his controversial views on slavery, Kim Kardashian West still appears to be looking at the silver lining. The reality television star has previously stated that her husband's views and opinions are different from hers and now she wants the 41-year-old rapper to "be who he wants to be."

Kardashian West, while appearing on The Alec Baldwin Show, on Sunday said: "I let [Kanye] be who he wants to be… I let him have his own views and opinions, even if they’re different from mine.”

The 38-year-old reality TV star said that she gets along with her husband despite their political differences as she learnt to embrace differences of opinions from growing up with Caitlyn Jenner. Although Jenner is a staunch conservative, she has recently slammed the Trump administration over its policies concerning LGBTQ issues.

"We would just always talk about it and be open about it. It was always okay to have different views. I think it’s just having an open mind," Kardashian West said, recalling her childhood and adding that her current dynamics with her husband is similar.

“[We] definitely have conversations if I don’t understand something in private and talk about that,” the mother-of-three said.

The reality star also said that there are some positives in her husband's controversial viewpoints, which has benefited her own political activism. Kardashian West had recently assisted in commuting the life sentence of 63-year-old Alice Marie Johnson, who spent 21 years in prison for a first-time, nonviolent drug offense. Kim had paid a visit to President Trump at the White House to discuss the case.

"I am aware that Kanye speaking out in favor of Trump got me through the door — got him to pick up my call," Kardashian said while talking to Richardson magazine. "I’ve always had different opinions than Kanye. But when I went there, and when I saw what could be done, I realized that I could get more done if I just stayed focused on the issue I was passionate about instead of complaining.”

“Alice always says if it wasn’t for Kanye speaking up in support of Trump, then she would still be in jail. She says it all the time," the 38-year-old said, referring to Alice Marie Johnson.
