Did Kanye West just rekindle beef with Drake or is he just going off the rails again?

Kanye West has been having a bittersweet year. Creatively, he's successfully gone back to his peak. Earlier this year, he retreated to his studio in the mountains and gave us the Wyoming Sessions, which gave rise to five back-to-back albums, the majority of which were highly acclaimed (Pusha T's 'Daytona', his own 'ye', and his collab with Kid Cudi, 'Kids See Ghosts').

He even finally made his way back to the stage as he debuted his outfit Kids See Ghosts with Cudi earlier this year. Of course, outside of his musical career, things have not been all that great. First, there was his eyebrow-raising comment during a TMZ interview on how slavery was a choice. He went on to clarify his statement but it didn't do too much damage control.

Then, there was the MAGA hat controversy which ultimately culminated in a bizarre meeting between Ye and President Donald Trump in the White House and then the awkward takeover at SNL. He then shed his 'Ye' era person and as is wont to often do, adopted the new 'Yandhi' image, which was also supposed to be the title of his new album, supposed to arrive this September. The album never came, but Kanye set off to Africa to get a feel of the motherland and seek inner peace and inspiration for the upcoming project.

But it looks like the peace didn't last too long, at least as far as his recently quelled beef with Drake is concerned. On Friday, Kanye resorted to one of his Twitterstorms to throw a string of accusations and warnings at Drake, along the way namedropping Travis Scott, Michael Jackson, Bible verses and more in his typical scatterbrain manner. Ye fired in over a hundred tweets across 24 hours and as of writing time, is still going at it, although he seems to have cooled off the Drake issue. Here's a little backstory to how things got here.

Kanye's beef with Drake, which initially stemmed from a 2010 incident where Kanye removed Drake's verse from his track 'All of the Lights', snowballed as the one-time friends and collaborators turned bitter. Drake took a jab at Kanye for the exclusion a few months later, taking aim at his The Throne project with Jay-Z.

“We still got to do that album,” Drake said, referencing his project with Lil Wayne, on Capital XTRA. “I heard some other guys are coming out with an album, too. There’s two other rappers that are coming out with an album together…I don’t know where they got that idea.”

In spite of trading blows, things appeared to have settled down when in an interview with Billboard in 2013, Drake said of his relationship with Kanye: “Me and Ye just fell into this thing where we hadn’t actually talked to each other in so long that all this stuff got built up. Sometimes you just have to find the opportunity to tell someone that you really like and respect them. After that, everything can move forward. Hopefully we give the world what they want, because I know they want it. I know me and Ye could do some crazy sh*t together.”

It seemed like things had simmered until a track by Quentin Miller that had originally been recorded for Drake surfaced in 2015, proof of Meek Mill’s earlier claims that Drake used a ghostwriter. To make things worse, Pusha-T on the Kanye-produced 'Daytona' highlight 'Infrared', took a shot at Drake employing ghostwriters with the line: “It was written like Nas, but it came from Quentin."

Now the beef was rekindled and had also pulled Kanye's labelmate Pusha into the storm. Drake fired back with a diss on 'Duppy Freestyle', in which he addressed the accusations and elaborated on his relationship with Miller. “And as for Q, man I changed his life a couple times ... was at Kroger working double time/ Y’all acting like he made the boy when I was trying to help the guy,” he rapped on the track.

The sh*t ultimately hit the fan when Pusha hit back with 'The Story of Adidon', in which he outed the fact that Drake had a secret child. Drake didn't immediately hit back but warned that he was sitting on a "career-ending" track. But before things could get any uglier, Kanye called for truce in September when he publicly apologized to Drake for a host of supposed offenses.

He expressed regret for stepping on the release date of Drake’s latest, 'Scorpion', with the release of his own new album, 'ye'; for leaving Drake off the track 'Lift Yourself'; and for not speaking to Pusha-T before Pusha dropped the bomb on 'The Story of Adidon'. Drake never accepted Kanye’s apology, however. In fact, shortly after, he appeared on a radio show and insisted that Kanye actually did play an active part in Pusha’s 'The Story of Adidon'.

Now, it looks like Kanye has reopened the floodgates with a flurry of half-coherent tweets, and this time, the core issue seems to have stemmed from Drake trying to get clearance for for 'Say What’s Real', the 'So Far Gone' track that samples Kanye. Ye also said he’s “been trying to meet with you for 6 months bro,” and accused Drake of “sneak dissing” him via Travis Scott songs.

Kanye also addressed the issue around 'The Story of Adidon'. “I told you I ain’t tell Pusha about your son,” he tweeted. “It’s all love bro bro but don’t play with me.”

“Sending purple emojis When I’m dealing with mental sh*t I need my apologies now Not through scooter either Not through Travis,” Kanye continued. Earlier, the beef between the two rappers took an absurd turn as the two “hit” back at one another via purple demon emojis! (What have rap battles come to!)

Suddenly, in the middle of the storm, things took a turn for the dark as Kanye tweeted "Drake called trying to threaten me”.

“The kid he had run on stage at Pushas concert is in critical condition,” he continued, implying that the Toronto rapper was behind the recent brawl at Pusha T’s concert in Toronto last month, where one person was stabbed. Kanye continued, “Since the pool line he’s been trying to poke at me and f**k with me.”

Kanye continued to warn Drake to not threaten him saying they're both too big to indulge in such frivolities now. “So Drake if anything happens to me or anyone from my family you are the first suspect. So cut the tough talk." A flow of jabs followed: “It just doesn’t sit right on my spirit” and “I got a family and kids. 69 is locked up xxx is dead. The kid that ran on stage is in the hospital.”

"There would never be a drake without a Kanye west so never come out your mouth with a threat," he said at one point. At another, he addressed his bipolar disorder saying such things can get him "ramped" and that Drake should lay off. Meanwhile, Drake seems to have taken this rather coolly and just dismissed the whole affair with a few laughing emojis on his Instagram stories.

But just as quickly as it started, Kanye seemed to have stepped off the gas pedal as he started throwing in messages of love and peace to all. "I’m Ye bro Remember that I love you I would never intentionally hurt you That’s what I’ve been saying to you," he said. He also refused to engage in the fight by making it clear that he will "never make a diss record. I will never put negative energy into a song. Only positive energy."

Kanye's thumbs are still at it and the tweets are still flowing in, but all of a sudden, he's now posting selfies with a portrait of JP Morgan from what appears to be their head office. "Me and JP heal the world," he tweeted.

As with everything else Kanye, it's not clear exactly what just happened here and what triggered the sudden flurry of tweets. Could this rekindle the beef for a second time? Oh, by the way, he did at one point mention that Drake is still "not cleared" for his sample so this might not be the end of this, in spite of Kanye's sporadic peace offerings.
