Kamala Harris wears Timberlands, Internet accuses her of trying to win Black voters: 'Hella insulting'

Although many appreciated her choice of footwear, there were several others who slammed the Democrat, suggesting that she had worn the particular brand of footwear to appease Black voters and win their votes.

Senator Kamala Harris, the Democratic Vice Presidential nominee, was slammed on Twitter on Wednesday, September 16, within minutes after a video of her getting off a jet wearing what appeared to be Timberland shoes became viral. "Timbs" — short for Timberland — began trending on Twitter as many social media users began pointing out that the VP candidate was wearing "Timbs," which are popular among the Black community in the US.

However, although many appreciated her choice of footwear, there were several others who slammed the Democrat, suggesting that she had worn the particular brand of footwear to appease Black voters and win their votes. One social media user wrote: "The fact that she think she winning the black people vote by wearing timbs and eating hot sauce to be relatable is hella insulting, this election probably the saddest one yet." While another said: "I’m really annoyed that people are so impressed that Kamala Harris is wearing Timbs. Everything that you see while someone is on the campaign trail is very carefully curated. From the colors they wear, to the shoes, how their hair is styled, the jewelry they wear, etc."

A third user alleged that the Senator was linked with mass incarceration of people: "Them weak ass timbs and y’all forgot about mass incarceration." A fourth added: "I might not have health insurance at the end of the year so it's nice to see kamala harris wearing timbs and joe biden dancing to despacito that's very reassuring." One user slammed the Democratic establishment for not stressing on issues pertinent to the voters like defunding the police and abolishing ICE: "Dem establishment will give you hot sauce, kente cloths, converse, timbs, hip hop concerts, a kneel or two, & some Mexican music, Dem establishment will not give you med 4 all, green new deal, defund police, housing as a human right, tax rich, legalized weed, abolish ice." 

Another wrote: "I want to understand the mind of a person who legitimately gets excited seeing kamala harris wearing timbs or chucks. what happens there?"

The criticism comes just days after Harris was appreciated on social media for wearing Chuck Taylor All-Stars Converse sneakers. A similar video of Harris hitting the campaign trail in Milwaukee wearing black Converse had gone viral, as many remarked that the Senator chose comfort over style. According to Harris' sister, the vice-presidential candidate owns several pair of Converse, and is generally "laced up and ready to win."

The Senator, in a 2018 interview with The Cut, had expressed her love for Converse, saying that she had a pair of shoes for every type of weather and occasion. "I run through airports in my Converse sneakers. I have a whole collection of Chuck Taylors: a black leather pair, a white pair, I have the kind that don’t lace, the kind that do lace, the kind I wear in the hot weather, the kind I wear in the cold weather, and the platform kind for when I’m wearing a pantsuit," Harris had said.
