Stormy Daniels ordered to pay Donald Trump nearly $300,000 in attorney's fees, sanctions over lawsuit
The amount is reportedly much less than what Trump's lawyer, Charles Harder, had asked for earlier this month in the US District Court in Los Angeles.
A federal judge on Tuesday ordered adult film star, Stormy Daniels, to pay President Donald Trump over $292,000 in attorney's fees and an additional $1,000 in sanctions after her defamation suit against the Republican was dismissed.
The amount is reportedly much less than what Trump's lawyer, Charles Harder, had asked for earlier this month in the US District Court in Los Angeles. Reports state Harder asked for nearly $800,000 in legal fees and sanctions.
US District Judge James Otero dismissed Daniels' suit which she had filed over a tweet which Trump wrote in April, and which suggested she was lying about being threatened to keep her sexual tryst with the president a secret.
Trump's lawyer, in a statement on Tuesday, said that the adult film star was ordered to pay the sum amounting to 75 percent of Trump's legal fees, according to CNBC. Harder added that the extra $1,000 was for her filing a "meritless" defamation action against his client.
"The court's order, along with the court's prior order dismissing Stormy Daniels' defamation case against the President, together constitute a total victory for the President, and a total defeat for Stormy Daniels in this case," Harder said.
Reports state that Harder billed Trump $841.64 per hour in the case, however, his other lawyers' charge rate generally ranges from $307.60 per hour up to $756.49 per hour.
Judge Otero, in his ruling, had called Harder's rates "reasonable," while adding that Trump's lawyers "are incredibly qualified."
Meanwhile, Daniels' lawyer Michael Avenatti, while talking to CNBC, in a text message said: "Harder and Trump deserve each other because they are both dishonest. They received less than one half what they asked for because the request was gross and excessive."
Avenatti was reportedly referring to the pending lawsuit against Trump that seeks damages associated with a non-disclosure agreement that Daniels has with him.
"Stormy will never have to pay a dime because they owe her over $1 million in attorney's fees and costs from the main NDA case, especially in light of Cohen's guilty plea to a felony," Avenatti wrote.
Trump's former personal lawyer Michael Cohen pleaded guilty to federal campaign law violations which also included a hush-money payment amounting to $300,000 to Daniels on the eve of 2016 presidential elections.
