Man wanted for kidnapping and raping three women arrested after he tried to abduct two more women
Authorities who were hunting a fugitive for the abduction and rapes of three women in locations in and around London have arrested a man after he abducted two more women in Cheshire. In the latest incident which took place on May 5, two women were forced into a black Fiat Punto in the Congleton town center. After a short car chase and thorough searches by deputies, 34-year-old Joseph McCann was found hiding on a tree in a rural lane close to the town.
BBC reported that trained negotiators were sent to the scene to speak to McCann before he was arrested. The vehicle was also spotted in Congleton on May 5 evening by officers and, after a short chase, the Punto crashed into another car and had stopped on Obelisk Way. The driver ran away leaving the terrified women behind.
Authorities immediately placed roadblocks in the surrounding area and revealed a little after 11 pm that they had found their suspect. In a statement that was released before the arrest, the Cheshire Constabulary said: "The man has been secured by officers in a rural area of Congleton and is currently talking to trained negotiators."
It continued: "There remains an increased police presence in the local area. The two women abducted in Congleton were not injured. However, they have been left extremely shaken as a result of their ordeal and are currently being supported by specially trained officers."
McCann was also wanted for questioning by authorities for the abduction and rape of a 21-year-old woman at knifepoint in Watford, Hertfordshire, early in the morning on April 21. The victim had been approached by a man wielding a knife in Hagden Lane at around 3:30 am during that attack. She said that she had been forced into a blue Ford Mondeo and was driven around town for nearly six hours before she was raped.
Detectives with the Met Police launched an appeal to find McCann after two women in their 20s were abducted off the streets in the capital on April 25. Another woman had been abducted in Chingford at around 12.30 am and yet another one was taken at 12.15 pm from Edgware.
Both the abducted women were raped before they were driven to a hotel in Watford. Their attacker then tried to book a room but left the hotel when one wasn't available. The women were then able to escape after a struggle ensued in Osborne Road at around 2.30 pm.
