Although Johnny Depp once had an estimated net worth of around $400 million, it has presently dwindled down to $200 million. Although far from broke, according to The Things, the actor ended up cutting his fortune by half due to his uber-expensive lifestyle that included an array of vices, impulsive purchases, and poor financial advice from his managers and loved ones.

Here a few factors that contributed to the dwindling of his savings:

Nosediving career

The main reason for his ever-decreasing fortune is the fact that he is spending more than he is bringing in. While Depp was a much-sought-after actor at one point, his career took a serious hit after he was accused of domestic abuse and painted as a wife-beater in the media following his divorce from Amber Heard in 2017.

He was fired from the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' franchise - the most successful and lucrative project he has been involved in. Soon other offers began to dry up too.

Expensive vices

Apart from blowing a truckload of money on weed and other drugs, he also spends $30,000 a month on wine. He is known to maintain a climate-controlled wine cellar and is seldom seen without a drink in his hands. "It's insulting to say that I spent $30,000 on wine, because it was far more," Depp said, Rolling Stone reported. "Wine is not an investment if you drink it as soon as you buy it."

Precious rides

He paid $18 million for a 156-foot yacht. And with that came hundreds of thousands of dollars a month in maintenance and staffing costs. When he was pressed for cash, he sold the beauty to JK Rowling, who has defended him in the past when the world was against him. The actor also reportedly spends $200,000 per month on private jets. These are the same jets that were involved in the case where Depp and Heard were accused of smuggling their dogs into Australia.

Real estate junkie

It only makes sense that you buy an island to complement the yacht that you have purchased. And that is exactly what Depp did. He dropped a cool $5 million for an island in the Bahamas. He called it 'F**k off' island. Apart from that, he also once owned 14 residences, of which five were located in Hollywood Hills, worth around $19 million. At present, he owns a 45-acre chateau and village in the south of France near Saint-Tropez, which is the biggest of the lot. He also reportedly wanted to build underground tunnels that would connect all his houses.

A cannon for his friend

Depp is a great friend. As a result, when his dear friend Hunter S. Thompson, a writer and journalist, died in 2005 and his body was cremated, Depp decided to give his friend the send-off he deserved. He paid around $5 million for a special cannon to blast his ashes over Aspen, Colorado, where the writer resided for much of his life.

Hoarding artwork, guitars and memorabilia

First, he spent millions and millions on guitars, artwork, and movie memorabilia. Then he spent millions and millions on storage space where he could keep the stuff he bought since he was a well-known hoarder and could not bear the thought of throwing them away.

Tax bill

Depp has often been accused of paying his taxes late, although he tends to turn around the accusations and blame his lawyers and accountants who work for him. The end result was him paying around $6 million to the Internal Revenue Service as penalties and interest.

Leeches surrounding him

The actor has a tendency of surrounding himself with the wrong kind of people. And that includes his managers from The Management Group (TMG), whom he sued for $25 million claiming fraud and mismanagement of his money in 2018. Even his family was reportedly mooching off of him. Out of his love for her, Depp bought his mother a horse farm in Kentucky and hired one of his sisters and her family to run it. His other sister, Christi, was in charge of his production company, which cost him some $7 million.

Then came his divorces. For the mother of his two children, Vanessa Paradis, he coughed up $127 million, although he never married her. When he divorced Heard, he ended up settling for $7 million.
