A popular celebrity’s marriage is always exciting news. As per reports, WWE star and actor John Cena and his girlfriend, Shay Shariatzadeh, have tied the knot in a private ceremony in Tampa on Monday, October 12.
E! News stated that details of the wedding are still not known and it was first reported by PWInsider. According to the report, the relationship came in the spotlight in October 2019, when the duo was spotted on a date night in Shay’s hometown Vancouver, Canada. The two made it public during the red carpet event of ‘Playing With Fire’ premiere in October 2019. The report quotes Cena as saying, "What's truly special about this one is that, no matter what projects I'm involved in the future, this one will always have a special meaning because I got to film a special project and meet someone special."
During the ‘Dolittle’ red carpet event, the two were spotted kissing publicly. Apparently, after a week of the ‘Dolittle’ event, Shay was spotted wearing a diamond ring. An eyewitness told E! News at that time, "She had a huge rock on her left hand! They were definitely holding hands, that's when I noticed him walk by." The couple had not confirmed or denied their engagement.
Who is Shay Shariatzadeh?
According to E! News, Shay has a bachelor's degree from the University of British Columbia in electrical and electronics engineering. The report quotes her interaction with Avigilon. She said, “I have always enjoyed math and physics. My brother studied engineering in school, and I remember one day he came home with a project and it was an autonomous car — and that was it! I decided to study Engineering.”
She has stated that her mother is her inspiration. She told Avigilon, “The strongest and most hard working woman I know is my mother. The biggest lesson she taught me was to be independent and fight for the things I want in life. She is a surgeon who worked day and night so we could have a good life. While she was at the peak of her career, she gave it all up to move her family to Canada to give us a better future. She is the reason I fight to be the best version of myself, to be kind and to never give up — because, despite all the hardship, she always smiled. She is my hero.” As per E! News, Shay has been working at Avigilon, a Motorola Solutions Company, in Vancouver, since May 2015. She served as product manager. The article also states that before she was an engineer, Shay had an experience of the retail world. For almost two years, she was a sales associate at Guess.
Before dating Shay, Cena was in a six-year relationship with WWE star Nikki Bella. The couple called off their engagement in May 2018. In an earlier statement from their reps, they shared, "After much contemplation and six years of being together Nikki Bella and John Cena announced today their decision to separate as a couple... While this decision was a difficult one, we continue to have a great deal of love and respect for one another. We ask that you respect our privacy during this time in our lives."
They reconciled briefly, but in October 2018 announced that after “much time and soul-searching alone and together” they were going their separate ways. Bella has moved on with ‘Dancing With the Stars’ partner Artem Chigvintsev, with whom she welcomed her first child, Matteo, in August 2020.
