CHESTERFIELD TOWNSHIP, MICHIGAN: The brother of 57-year-old radio journalist Jim Matthews, who was found dead on September 23, has claimed that the suspect Arthur Levan Williamson, 55, was a friend of Nichole Guertin, 35, Matthew’s girlfriend and mother of his two children, aged 5 and 10. The brother Joe Nicolai said that Guertin and Williamson, who have been charged with felony murder, two counts of assault with intent to murder, and three counts of unlawful imprisonment, met at a narcotics anonymous meeting in a nearby church and he had seen the suspect visiting his brother’s home several times.
Talking to DailyMail, Nicolai said, "I don’t know exactly what business he has there with them. All I know is that he met Nichole at a NA meeting, I’d never heard him mentioned and I live across the street. I have seen him a couple of times leave and go into the place. He is a demon sent straight from hell. He should have been institutionalized years ago – he shouldn’t have been allowed out." Williamson, who is accused of fatally stabbing Matthews, also stabbed Guertin multiple times during the attack but she managed to escape the horrific scene with her 5-year-old daughter, Rosie, who was not seriously injured. On the other hand, the 10-year-old son Hunter was found tied up with head trauma, as previously reported.

According to the Michigan Department of Corrections, Williamson has eight previous convictions including kidnapping and assault with intent to commit murder. But in spite of this, he was released on parole on January 22 of this year, after being sentenced for assaulting a police officer in the year 2015, reports DailyMail. Commenting on this, Nicolai said, "He’s got a really bad track record is what the police and his colleagues said. I’m very happy that he is going to be arraigned, and face justice for the crimes that he has committed." However, he stressed, "There are still a lot of emotions with the family, as well as anger. What business did this man have at the home with the children, why was he a frequent visitor? These are the answers I would like to have. How someone with his history can just be released into this society I just can’t wrap my brain around it."
Matthews' brother also informed that Guertin, who was with Matthews for around two decades before their eldest was born, is on suicide watch and remains in hospital in a stable condition. The couple had recently moved back in together, after Guertin’s struggles with drug abuse. And authorities said they found the 54-year-old male suspect in the basement, overdosed and suffering from self-inflicted wounds. He was rushed to hospital and was then taken into police custody at Macomb County Jail.
Both children will be looked after by their aunt, Ashley Quigley, after getting discharged. A GoFundMe page confirmed that the son underwent successful surgery on his neck and can now move both sides of his body. Commenting on the status of the children's condition, another aunt Pammy Healy said, "Rosie is doing amazing. After the things that happened to her, I'm so thankful that she isn't quite old enough to understand it. She's in a chipper mood and ready to go see auntie Ashley. She now has guardianship of Hunter and Rosie, we're hoping that's long term."
