After the White House took a brief break from having a four-legged pet running around the lush green lawns in the Trump era, with Joe Biden declared the 46th president of the United States, one can hope that the president-elect's two German shepherds, Champ and Major will be barking up trees come January.

Champ has been with the Bidens since 2008, and the Bidens fostered and then adopted Major from the Delaware Humane Society in 2018. An article on Vogue read, "But Champ and Major moving into 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue isn’t just about photo ops; it represents the White House coming back to life." Apparently, Biden did not become a dog owner till he became the vice president back in 2008.

As the story goes, in 2008, Obama promised his wife Michelle that they could get a dog if he won the election. As a result, when he did become the president, the first couple decided to keep the promise and they got their dog Bo, a Portuguese Water Dog, in 2009. Not unlike his boss, Biden also made the same promise to his wife, and that is how Champ entered their lives. However, at the time, many animal lovers slammed Biden because Champ was not a rescue dog and instead was bought from a dog breeder in Pennsylvania. He was named by Biden's granddaughters.

Following the backlash that they received when they adopted Champ, for the second dog, the Bidens decided to visit the Delaware Humane Association. However, if it wasn't for Biden's daughter Ashley, they would have never even heard of Major as she was the one who sent her father a picture of a litter of puppies that needed a home on an urgent basis as they were being exposed to toxins. The news of Major’s adoption by the Bidens also created headlines after the association posted it on their Instagram page.

"Today is Major’s lucky day! Not only did Major find his forever home, but he got adopted by Vice President Joe Biden & Dr. Jill Biden! The Bidens have gotten to know Major while fostering him and are now ready to make the adoption official. Best of luck and thank you for being one of our Friends for life!" the post said.

Citing the fact that Trump was the first president in 130 years not to have a pet dog living at the White House, earlier this month, the Biden campaign even posted a video to Twitter claiming that he wanted to put dogs back there. His campaign has also used his dogs to attract voters to vote for Bien in the recent past. One such tweet read, "Pawse. Champ Biden has a message for you all. Don't forget to vote by November 3rd!"

Explaining why he didn't have a pet, at a rally in El Paso, Texas, Trump said last year, "You do love your dogs, don’t you?” Trump said to a cheering crowd. “I wouldn’t mind having one, honestly, but I don’t have any time. How would I look walking a dog on the White House lawn?"
