President Joe Biden was spotted near his residence in Delaware, on his way to a bike ride, stopping to speak to reporters who asked him if he was considering declaring a public health emergency regarding abortion access. Biden said he was asking his staff to see "whether I have the authority" and what the impacts would essentially be.

Biden also encouraged women demonstrating against the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v Wade. Asking the women to "keep protesting", the president said, "Keep making your point. It’s critically important. We can do a lot of things to accommodate the rights of women." He added, "In the meantime, fundamentally, the only way to change this is to have a national law that reinstates Roe v Wade."

Biden on Friday, July 8, signed an executive order to ease access to services to terminate pregnancies. The president has been under pressure from fellow Democrats to take action following the landmark decision last month. Last week, protesters crowded Morton's Steakhouse in downtown Washington, DC, after they learned that Trump-appointed Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh was dining inside. Gathering outside of the restaurant, the activists demanded that the conservative jurist be thrown out. The group later claimed on social media that Kavanaugh had to exit through the back, accompanied by his security.

Despite Biden's effort to encourage the protests, however, he is being trolled on social media for riding a bike days after he was caught on camera falling off one. "Why is he riding a bike? He can't climb stairs but he's risking his life -literally by riding a bike. He's the POTUS and this is irresponsible," one user wrote on Twitter. "Who let this guy back on a bicycle?" wrote another user. "He needs a football helmet for them bike rides," commented one user.

Biden's own party has blasted his efforts to protect abortion access and for not going far enough. Many have claimed that although there is a fine sentiment, it is hard to implement, including calls to build abortion clinics on federal land in states where the practice is banned at present.

In a statement to Washington Post, Biden's communications director, Kate Bedingfield, unleashed against such Democratic critics. "Joe Biden’s goal in responding to Dobbs is not to satisfy some activists who have been consistently out of step with the mainstream of the Democratic Party," Bedingfield said. "It’s to deliver help to women who are in danger and assemble a broad-based coalition to defend a woman’s right to choose now, just as he assembled such a coalition to win during the 2020 campaign."
