This year’s Valentine’s day was the first for Joe Biden and his wife Jill after moving into the White House as President. The US leader took to Twitter to wish the first lady as he tweeted, “The love of my life and the life of my love. Happy Valentine’s Day, Jilly.” This comes after the first couple made an unannounced visit to the White House North Lawn along with their two German Shepherds, Champ and Major, on Friday, February 12. The pair saw the heart-themed decorations meant as Valentines for the people of America.

The decorations were reportedly done by using oversized pink, white and red hearts with words, like "healing," "strength," and "unity", written over them. According to Jill, the words were meant to give "a little joy, a little hope”. However, during the tour, Joe did not reveal what he would be giving his wife on Valentine’s as he said, "It's not Valentine's Day, I'm not telling you.”

Joe and Jill have been married to each other for the last 43 years. The couple tied the knot in 1977 after the 78-year-old lost his first wife, Neilia, and their baby daughter, Naomi, in a car wreck. During a recent interview with PEOPLE, they shared how years ago, Joe started gifting Jill a corsage for Valentine's Day. The 69-year-old told the magazine, “I don't know when it started — a long, long time ago. I think it was for Valentine's Day. I love gardenias and so Joe would buy me a wrist corsage of gardenias. I wore it to school to teach!"

“Every single special occasion. It's important to, and Jill does the same thing, let each other know that, no matter how much time goes by … she goes down the steps and—It still goes a little boom, boom, boom, boom. For real,” Joe added while tapping his heart with his hand. He also explained how Jill handled the family well after Neilia’s death. At the time, the Democrat was a single father with two little sons. “Jill came along at a really important point and put my family back together. She's the glue that held it together,” Joe told PEOPLE.

People on the internet reacted to Joe’s Valentine’s Day post as one user tweeted, “It is so refreshing to have a president who really loves and respects his spouse.” “Thank you for bringing family values back to the Whitehouse PS Please put the Kennedy Rose Garden back in,” another user commented. One user with the username RdZ@pentzman said, “You two remind me of teenagers in love! Happy Valentine’s Day to you both !!” The second one noted, “You two are such fantastic relationship role models. The respect and kindness you display towards each other is so important for others to see and want to emulate.”

However, there were a few who were not happy with the president celebrating the day of love as one said, “You've inflicted a lot of pain on people since you became President but this takes the cake, you KNOW you're separating hundreds of thousands of people from their partners with travel bans you openly criticized last year. We voted for relief and you ignored us. #LoveIsNotTourism.” Another one added, “That’s it. That seals the deal. I’ve been an american citizen for 54 years and in all my time of being one i’ve never seen a president this bad.I’ll be moving to Zimbabwe where they actually know how to run a country.”
