JK Rowling branded 'racist' as internet flays her for naming Harry Potter's Asian character Cho Chang
Celebrated author JK Rowling came under fire after some of the recent comments made by her had everyone convinced that she is transphobic. So much so that now most of social media and her former fans are calling for her to be canceled.
It all went down when Rowling re-tweeted an article that stated "Opinion: Creating a more equal post-COVID-19 world for people who menstruate."
Rowling followed the tweet with a comment that read, "‘People who menstruate.’ I’m sure there used to be a word for those people. Someone help me out. Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud?"
She further wrote, "If sex isn’t real, there’s no same-sex attraction. If sex isn’t real, the lived reality of women globally is erased. I know and love trans people, but erasing the concept of sex removes the ability of many to meaningfully discuss their lives. It doesn’t hate to speak the truth."
Fans were quick to slam her for her comments. While doing so, some took the time to point out how the characters in the book 'Harry Potter' had also reflected some of the racist thoughts that she had. People were unable to move past the fact that the Asian character on the show had been named Cho Chang.
Many thought it was racist and wrong of Rowling to use that in the book. "I love how Cho Chang is trending. Gotta get that one off my chest. Jk Rowling gave the one Chinese character the name equivalent of ching Chong. Then that character ended up being a snitching ass square. And did literally nothing in the series but date people," read one comment.
"Can we also address JK Rowling's racism n antisemitism in Harry Potter while she’s canceled? Because naming a Chinese character Cho Chang doesn't sit right, the goblins being the stereotypes of Jewish types inc the star of David in the bank and big noses is a yikes," another wrote.
"From the same woman who brought us “Cho Chang” (I knew that was so problematic when I was like 11!!! And a grown-ass woman couldn’t?) and banner goblins that were essentially antisemitic caricatures... JK Rowling just has to sit tf down," a third wrote.
While many have been pointing fingers at Rowling and calling her out for being problematic, she has not backed down from her comments.
Rowling tried to clear the air by stating that she did support trans people and her words were taken out of context. Despite this, people have been ruthless and even hinted at boycotting the next part of 'Fantastic Beasts'.
