Jim Carrey says Trump appeals to ‘basest, most primitive urges’ in op-ed comparing POTUS to Michael Corleone

Actor Jim Carrey, a staunch critic of President Donald Trump, slammed the Republican again, stating that many Americans support Trump "because he appeals to their basest and most primitive urges." The actor made the statement in an op-ed written for The Atlantic magazine a day after the outlet released an explosive report, claiming Trump called slain US soldiers "suckers" and "losers."

Carrey, in the piece, also asked: "Where did the modern Republican Party’s cruelty come from?" The 'Bruce Almighty' star continued: "Too many Americans support Trump because he appeals to their basest and most primitive urges, through his racism, his misogyny, his mockery of the disabled, and his encouragement of violence during his campaign. If you consider yourself a patriot, know full well that the direction the Republican Party has taken threatens to obliterate America’s once hopeful experiment in liberty."

The actor, in the op-ed, also compared Trump's speech last week during the Republican National Convention (RNC) to a scene in 'The Godfather', where Michael Corleone declares his belief in God during the baptism scene. "Watching Trump accept the nomination of the Republican Party in the people’s house during a pandemic he exacerbated was like watching Michael Corleone swear a sacred oath while his underlings settled scores across the city,” Carrey wrote. In the film's scene, while Corleone is presiding over his nephew's baptism and declaring his belief in God, his henchmen gun down his family's enemies across the city.

The actor also made a reference to 'Home Alone' in his op-ed. "I was amused to see Trump play the self-made billionaire in 'Home Alone 2', but the presidency is not performance art. People’s lives depend on him. Our future is at stake," Carrey wrote.

Carrey, who often slams Trump and his administration through his sketches and paintings, had last year depicted Trump in a cartoon as the 'Godfather' making Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky "an offer he couldn't refuse." The actor cast Trump as Godfather's Don Vito Corleone, played by Marlon Brando in the film. The cartoon shows Trump asking the Ukrainian president for a favor. The actor, while posting the cartoon, also wrote the caption, saying: "The Fraudfather made Zelensky 'an offer he couldn’t refuse'." Trump, in the cartoon, says: "Someday, and that day may never come, I'll call upon you to do a service for me. But until that day, accept this gift of military aid on my daughter's wedding day." Carrey was referring to a whistleblower's complaint that Trump had asked for a favor from Zelensky to find dirt on his political rival Joe Biden.

The actor's most recent political illustration showed Abraham Lincoln reacting to the RNC by sticking a gun in his mouth. “In November, we must vote in historic numbers, gathering all the ‘snowflakes’ until there’s a blizzard on Capitol Hill that no corrupt politician can survive,” Carrey wrote in conclusion. “We must vote for decency, humanity, and a way of life that once again captures the imagination of kids all over the world—kids like me.”
