CNN White House Correspondent Jim Acosta slammed President Donald Trump on Monday, September 7, accusing him of turning his coronavirus press briefing into a campaign event. Trump decided to hold the event at the North Portico, a more formal outdoor space in the White House, mostly reserved to welcome international leaders and make key announcements.

During the campaign event, Trump called his Democratic presidential election rival, Joe Biden, “stupid”, and accused him and his running mate, Kamala Harris, of peddling anti-vaccination conspiracy theories. He also spoke about China, Ukraine and Biden’s son Hunter’s business dealings in those countries. Incumbent presidents usually separate campaign rallies from official White House activities to avoid backlash and the potential legal issues surrounding the use of taxpayer-funded resources for campaigning activities. Speaking after the briefing, Acosta said, “Just as they used the White House for the political backdrop for the convention on the south lawn of the White House, he did the same on the north of the White House. It is very unusual to see the President of the United States give a press conference in that north portico area. I’m not sure it’s ever happened, at least not in a long time.”

Lambasting Trump for using a taxpayer-funded press briefing as a campaign rally, Acosta added, “And he essentially used it as a campaign event. This was a rally disguised as a news conference. We’ve seen this before, we’ll see it again. I do think it’s somewhat surprising that he doesn’t just go out and hold a campaign rally or speech somewhere, why he feels he needs to do it from the White House. I think that’s a question that needs to be asked.” Many critics of Trump took to social media to praise Acosta for his remarks to describe the Trump administration. One user tweeted, “Jim Acosta calling out the president [sic] using a taxpayer-funded press conference as a campaign rally. We need more of this.”

Another wrote on the micro-blogging website, “Jim Acosta calls out the White House briefings for what they are, MAGA hate rallies, great job Jim.”

“Jim Acosta has snapped...and I love it,” wrote one Twitter user. Another tweeted, “Trump using the White House like its Stormy Daniels. He has dishonored the peoples House. Hes turned it into his personal campaign backdrop. Jim Acosta knows Trump better than Trump knows himself.”

Another person simply tweeted, “Jim Acosta is a great reporter. Trump is the worst POTUS in history. THE END.”

“Trump supporters attacking jim acosta for pointing out trump's abuse of taxpayer dollars is exactly why you will never convince a trump supporter of anything. their loyalty to him is purely emotional, not rational. #TrumpMeltdown,” wrote another user.

One user tweeted, “Glad Jim Acosta calls out the White House briefings for what they are, MAGA hate rallies that serve not a single bit of purpose but to spread propaganda.” Echoing similar sentiments, another one wrote, “Jim Acosta is a treasure. One of the few journalists willing to contradict, Call out, question Trumps blatant lies.”

However, many of Trump's supporters called out Acosta for his statement. One user tweeted, “Correction: CNN's Jim Acosta, a Democratic operative disguised as a journalist, calls out Trump for holding a news conference at the White House.”

Another one wrote, “Jim Acosta is a legend in his own mind! LOL… Narcissistic personality disorder.”

“It's hilarious to watch Jim Acosta and the media have a melt down because they can't handle their own creation. If the "journalists" in DC choose to treat a press briefing as a gotcha gossip session dont be surprised when Trump answers your questions the way he has to. #Trump2020,” another person said.

“I actually liked Jim Acosta before Trump. It's unfortunate what happened to him Since Trump came to power. He has a serve TDS that keeps evolving overtime. Sad,” tweeted another user.
