Jessica Simpson recently came clean about a number of things from her turbulent past in her latest memoir titled 'Open Book', which released on February 4. Simpson revealed a lot of never-heard-before details in the new book, including her addiction to alcohol and pills, her relationship with the famed guitarist John Mayer, and also her troubled marriage with the musician Nick Lachey.

One of the things that Jessica focused on was how her marriage with the '98 Degrees' singer progressively got worse over the years. Their relationship was famously showcased on their MTV reality show, 'Newlyweds: Nick & Jessica', and lasted from 2002 till their separation in 2005. Their divorce was eventually finalized the following year, in June 2006.

Jessica's father and manager, the minister Joe Simpson, famously tried to get his young daughter to rethink her marriage to Nick Lachey mere minutes before she was due to walk down the aisle and embark on her life of happily wedded bliss - so it was clear that there were red flags from the start!

"With Nick, I was madly in love," Jessica said in an interview with Entertainment Tonight. "I mean, I loved everything about the guy and I wanted to spend the rest of my life with him. I was 22 years old when we got married (Lachey was 28 years old), but I thought I knew my future and I thought he was gonna be in it forever. I thought my dad was completely wrong. I was like, 'No, I got this figured out. Watch.' You know? Like, I'll prove you wrong."

However, it seemed like Simpson's dad was definitely the wiser, after tensions broke out soon after Nick and Jessica got married. Living out their lives in the public eye and being surrounded by cameras for most of the day also didn't help matters at hand. The couple started fighting more, and they started spending more and more time apart. Tensions and jealousies escalated, and eventually, it got to the point where Nick couldn't even stand to look at her, according to Jessica - the writing was on the wall by that point.

According to her book, on November 22, 2005, Jessica finally told Nick that their relationship was over. The following day, she took a flight to be with her parents in Texas for the Thanksgiving weekend. But en route to the airport, Jessica called her father Joe to tell him about the separation - and remembers him telling her that he was proud of her, and much to Jessica's horror, her father revealed that he wished he had the nerve to tell her mother about the same thing.

Her mother Tina, was initially not very happy on hearing about her daughter's decision to leave Lachey, telling her “You are America’s couple!” But she eventually came around to the fact that Jessica and Nick were never going to reconcile amicably, and supported her decision wholeheartedly.

For more details about Nick and Jessica's troubled relationship, you can read her memoir, 'Open Book', available for sale now! And if you buy the audiobook version, you will also be treated to six new songs by Jessica Simpson, who is releasing new music after 10 years.
