Jason Mraz gets candid about his 'Two Spirit' sexuality: "I've had experiences with men"
Jason Mraz has been the center of attention after he penned an original poem in June, celebrating Pride Month. In a new interview with Billboard, however, the 41-year-old singer answered candidly as he discussed his sexuality and even revealed how he has had different experiences in the past. “Honestly, I didn’t realize it was going to be so telling,” Mraz told the website, addressing his Pride poem, which reads: "We still have a long way to go/But know / I am bi your side. / All ways.”
Opening up on this topic, the 'I'm Yours' hitmaker, who has been married to Christina Carano since 2015, further explained that it was his wife who helped him ultimately come in terms with his sexuality.
“But I’ve had experiences with men, even while I was dating the woman who became my wife. It was like, ‘Wow, does that mean I am gay?’” he continued. “And my wife laid it out for me. She calls it ‘two spirit,’ which is what the Native Americans call someone who can love both man and woman. I really like that.”
While this is the first time the singer-songwriter has gone on record about his personal life in such detail, he has been quite vocal in the past as well when it comes to having an open mind in terms of his sexuality. “I have a bisexually open mind,” Mraz, in a 2005 interview with Genre magazine, had dished. “But I have never been in a sexual relationship with a man. If the right one came along, then sure.”
As quoted by People magazine, the singer further added, “I had a gay friend I was hanging out with just about every day. We were basically best friends. It took me about three months before I realized, ‘Oh my god, we’re dating’”... Right before I moved to California he gave me a pretty strong-willed kiss goodbye, which I have never experienced before. Unfortunately, he had a little bit more facial hair than I like.”
